Kapil Dev my have been the best all rounder that Indian cricket has produced (and that’s saying a lot for our standard), but in my opinion he’s any and all of the following:

·     Cheat
·     Wimp
·     Fraud
·     Publicity hungry faded icon
·     Worst cricket captain
·     Worst cricket coach

Now I will dwell on each and every point in detail.

Cheat

Remember, the match-fixing controversy and Kapil’s role in it. Well, the CBI has exonerated him but I’m sure that even

there he has fixed an greased quite a few palms. While the evidence to nail him was there right in front of us (remember Lele, Shastri and what they had to say), the basis on which he was declared not guilty was so feeble. Still don’t believe that this man was declared not guilty. Maybe, if he was declared guilty a whole lot of other big and swollen heads might have fallen under the risk of being chopped. For example, Gavaskar, Shastri and a highly revered Mr. Tendulkar (remember the follow on case against New Zealand and the disastrous run chase against West Indies on their soil?).

Wimp

Two incidents come to mind easily. One, I still cannot hold back a smile when I recall Kapil bawling in front of an amused Karan Thapar. And second, remember Kapil sniffing like a bahu when accepting the Wisden Indian Cricketer of the Century award. All the tears were shed for a certain Mohd. Azharuddin

Fraud

First, as a coach, with the connivance of a highly “respected and successful” captain, he keeps Azhar out of the squad (or at least he tries to) and then he sheds tears while remembering him and Ajay Jadeja at the Wisden ceremony. You can’t get worse than this.

Publicity hungry faded icon

No body cares what Kapil is doing these days, or what he has to say. But the man is every where, inaugurating shops and salons, giving speeches in his “ah-so-purrfect-English”, accepting awards, passing comments on Saurav darling and his side. My question is, how does this man manage to do all this?

Worst cricket captain

He is by far the worst cricket captain that India has produced in recent times. Just 4 test wins in his long and “celebrated” career. Yes, he did win the World Cup, but remember what happened after that? The West Indies just hammered us black and blue in the follow-up series. And this guy has the guts to criticize Saurav, India’s most successful captain to date.

Worst cricket coach

I will not say anything regarding this. Period.
