Kapal Kundla – Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay

Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay was a well known Bengali writer, Poet and journalist. Bankim Da was got popularity through revolutionary novel “Anand Math” and a song from this Novel “Vande Mataram”. He was the composer of India’s national song Vande Mataram. Bankim Chandra wrote 13 novels and several ‘serious, serio-comic, satirical, scientific and critical treaties’ in Bengali. His works were widely translated into other regional languages of India as well as in English.

KapalKundla was Bankim Da second novel in his writing career. Kapalkundla is considered as one of finest novel and most popular novel of Bankim Da. The story is set in Dariapur, Contai in modern-day Purba Medinipur district, Paschimbanga (West Bengal) where Chattopadhyay served as a Deputy Magistrate and Deputy Collector.

Some of the context and event of this novel reflects the nature of thriller. Well, this novel is based on a female character named Kapalkundla who had scarified herself and his love. Bankim Da used again female character in background in this novel.

Navkumar is a Youngman returning from pilgrim from Gangasagar through Ship. His ship lost in the sea due to mist and reached to a deserted island. To arrange the food for the other people of ship, Navkumar entered into forest and did not return till evening. When he returned with food, he found that ship was gone. He took some round on the island and found some light on the island. He meets a Tantrik named Kapalik nearby light source. Kapalik gave him some food and a hut to stay. Next night, Kapalik want to sacrifice Navkumar to goddess Kali. But before sacrifice, He was saved by a young woman. Young woman hide Navkumar in a Bhairav Temple. Here Navkumar met with young woman mother. His mother told his name as Kapalkundla and she was worried for her life as Kapalik must sacrifice her now. Kapalkundla find out a solution, told Kapalkundla and Navkumar to left the island before Kapalik came to sacrifice Kapalkundla. But he told Navkumar to marry with her. Navkumar agreed for the marriage. After marriage Kapalkundla and Navkumar left island ASAP to Saptgram, village of Navkumar.

In the way to Saptgram, Navkumar helped a woman Motibai. When Motibai got the introduction of Navkumar, She remembered her past. In past, Motibai was first wife of Navkumar but due to adopting Muslim religion by Motibai parents, Navkumar parents rejected her. Motibai gave all her Jwellery to Kapalkundla. Navkumar and Kapalkundla reached Saptgram. Navkumar parents were happy to see him alive and agreed to accept Kapalkundla. Kapalkundla lived her past life as alone woman as Vestal (Sadhvi) as holy life. So she was not able to live her family life normally. Navkumar sister helps her to live normal family life. Later Kapalkundla enjoying her family life but she does not accept the restriction of society for woman.

After a while Motibai came to Saptgram and gave her real introduction to Navkumar. But Navkumar reject her proposal. After that Motibai get in touch with Kapalik. Kaplik wants Kapalkundla and Motibai wants Navkumar. Both were scheming to get their person. Motibai sent the message to Kapalkundla to meet.

While Kapalkundla left house for meeting, Navkumar asked for the late night outing from house. But Kapalkundla did not explain any reason. Navkumar got suspicious and he followed her. In between, Kapalik met Navkumar and stated that his wife betrayed him and had gone to meet unknown person. Motibai told the truth to Kapalkundla that how Kapalik want to hit her as target by using the ladder as her husband. Hearing this, Kapalkundla take an oath to sacrifice herself to Goddess Kali. Kapalik gave some drugs to Navkumar and ordered to Navkumar to give a bath to Kapalkundla in sea before sacrificial rite. During this process, Navkumar got his conscious back and think what evil work he was doing. Kapalkundla stated him about the oath and just jumped in the sea. Navkumar tried to find out her again but she was not found.

Distrust ruined Navkumar family life. In Indian society, distrust for woman is very normal and these evils thought and Superstition ruined many family and life today. Trust is an important fact that a person brings their own way in use.

The scene of seashore, that moment when Kapalik drugged Navkumar, this moment scene and event sequence was just like story of Ghost. You can feel the real thrill, real suspense and real mystery. Bankim Da just presents this situation in simple and natural way but you can’t miss the thrill. In the first meeting of Kapalkundla and Navkumar, we can think some spirit is helping Navkumar. The character of Kapalik is so strong and in best position after Kapalkundla. Bankim Da described female character very beautifully and you can check this out in this novel. Bankim Da present two character of woman in this novel. A woman Kapalkundla, not accepting the rules of society, want to live her life on own rules, have lot of faith on her husband etc. while Motibai tries lot of things to get Navkumar. Sister of Navkumar helped Kapalkundla. KapalKundla is a strong, beautiful and unbelievable character. I am not able to explain about this creation of Bankim Da. Even the name sounds strange, but the kind of beauty that has been shown breaks the limit of embellishments. Beauty is not just merely a jewel of a woman, her talk, behavior, shame, culture etc. are also precious jewels of a woman. Motibai always try to get Navkumar. Bankim Da presents Motibai more beautiful than Kapalkundla but only beauty is not jewel of woman. Navkumar finally emerges as a character which is hard to imagine. Bankim Da always presents female character in very dept in his novels. Bankim Da presents this story very beautifully by using only few characters.

I will wait for your feedback over this classic novel.
