This album is special becos it brings together the
3 Legends of Indian Cinema. One who has blown us away with his Excellent Music ,another who has given us some of the Most Memorable movies ever Made in India, and finally the third who has constantly out-performed himself with Superb Lyrics.
Yes, I am talking about
A. R. Rahman, Mani Rathnam and Vairamuthu..
Kannathil Mutthammittal is embellished with
5 tracks all completely varied in rhythm yet so very melodious. It has proved yet again this this combination is Lethal and Potent, coming up with Chart-Busting tracks every time!
Vairamuthu has a special ability to write Wonderful Lyrics that are so thoughtful. have so much meaning in them, yet are simple to listen to and dont feel boring like sermons. Compare that to the best of our Bollywood lyricists like Gulzar and u realise that there is simply no competition. Just hear the lyrics of Saathiya and compare those with what Vairamuthu wrote for Alai Payudhe, the original version and u see a World of Difference. The title track of Saathiya, in the original, was Amazingly Good and described every colour and its relation with women, their emotions and physical characteristics like eyes, soul etc. Gulzars lyrics are absolutely Mediocre in Comparison and stand out like a sore thumb because they dont go in Sync with the music, the rhythm.
Side A kicks off with
Vellai Pookal, sung by Rahman himself. Its a slow number, more like a prayer for peace throughout the world. Rahman does a Great Job of singing as well composing the song. It moves at a gentle pace and guitars play the major role during the interludes.
Then comes
Sundari, sung by Lots of Singers, some 6 of them, including Hariharan, Sujatha and children, and is a Fun Song that gives us a Sneak Peek at the Persona of the Central Character in the movie, which is the Girl. Its a fun song that will be enjoyed by one and all. The lyrics are again expertly penned and the rhythm is, well different from the usual Rahman songs. Enjoy!
Finally we have the title track, which is
MY PERSONAL FAVOURITE. Sung by Chinmayi, this song is the highlight of the movie simply because its
MIND-BLOWING!!! It starts off really well, and.......its really tough to explain why the song is so good. All that I can say is that it is a SOOTHING number with extensive use of flutes and beats interwoven to create
MAGIC. U have to hear it to believe me. Theres another version of the same song in Side 2 by Jayachandran, which is equally good.
Side 2 has 3 tracks too.
The first is
Signore Signore, again sung by a group of singers. Its a Lankan number which has lyrics not everyone will be comfortable with. Again something different compared to all Rahman numbers. This is not an Item number and is made specifically according to the requirements of the movie, hence offbeat in nature.
The last track is
Vidai Kodu, sung by the legendary music composer, M. S. Viswanathan. This is kinda sad song about the hardships faced by the Lankans due to the war between the government and the rebels. This number asks a very pertinent question, as to who benefits as a result of all this violence and till when will this go on? Again little off-beat in tune and style, this one may not be as popular.....well, depends on an individuals tastes.
All you Rahman and Mani fans, this is a Bonanza.....so dont wait.....go grab your copies from the Music Stores!!!
