Pirivom Azhaigale(Lets depart the bouncing waves of sea),and saying so the sound will raise to a great level, and even the most emotionally intelligent person would be subject to
a sea of emotions.Sheer magical talent from three masters, each in their own right made that high emotional moment.A.R.Rahman marvellously designs the musical streams in strict correlation to the emotions,Vairamuthu lyrically enhances the emotional levels, and as an icing on the cake veteran M.S.Vishwanathan renders his excellent voice, using all his experience. Like many fans,I was unhappy that Maniratnam picturised only three songs, out of Rahmans six impeccable numbers, the others being used in background. But it takes time for one to agree that these songs could not have come at the right sequence, and as Mani himself quoted,he was careful not to over emote the audience in an already emotional strong film. KANNATHIL MUTTAMITAL requested by the Oscar officials,as replacement for Devdas is a big bundle of emotions. And a r rahman has been instrumental in producing emotionsally stong music notes, which are deftly managed by Maniratnam.like the above example.
The album has six superb songs. The first one Vellai Pookal Ulagam rendered by the phenomennal rahman himself, is a masterly melodious song.It was quite surprising and thrilling to hear a r rahman sing a melodious song, and he does this to a T too.The lyrics by Vairamuthu storngly vouch for a peaceful tomorrow.Lines like Let everyday wake up with the smile of an innocent child are highly potent and relevant. The title song Kannathil Muttamital, the critics song of 2002 was in male and female versions rendered by Jayachandran and Chinmayee respectively.
The lyrics are of a great grade, and rahman is wise enough to carry them through with optimum sounds. And when this song is eulogised as a mordern lullaby, you are at your wits end trying to figure out how these individually new sounds and lyrics collectively sum up as a lovely lullaby. The wise leave the phenomenals,as they are. The song Sundari is an emotional relief,to say.A song on the pranks of a small girls,so as to introduce her charecter to the audience is a horrendous task. But Rehman and Vairamuthu were equal to the work, and deliver a chirpy and rich note, that creates an immediate impact among the children, and is a hummable number by one and all. Signore, another jovial number is a Srilankan folk song, and every Lankan would be proud of such a simple yet swashbuckling song.Rahman just eases through with the drums, and typical lankan instruments, but that is enough to encode an encouraging encore. My special song is Vidhai Kodu, a song that would give vent to the feelings of a refugee on leaving his motherland. After hearing all the songs on the audio,I was very enthusiastic to see it visually, but Maniratnam thought differently. The lyrics of the song were of magnanimous magnitude .We have opened our eyes here. Were are we supposed to close them?.Which land will give me the freedom of my motherland?Which language will give me the pleasurre of my mother tongue?.
The legendary M.S.Vishwanathan and the upcoming Balram, representing two highly diverse generations in Tamil Cinema combine harmoniously to etch out emotions.Rahman makes his presence felt throughout with highly effective sounds and instruments. If at all you happen to be slightly passionate about your country, or motherland, your tears and outbursts are 100% guaranteed. A masterpiece of an album that has to be showcased to tell all old timers that mordern music isnt all about tapping sounds, high instrumentation and bizzare lyrics alone.Kannatil Muttamital album is a shining example of the influence of music,on our subconscious emotions,a rarity in this era.
