First of all, I would say that I can’t remember many details of this movie.

Is it the new convention of Bollywood that the movie’s setting has to be all in America or made in America
.
At the beginning, the director has tried to foreground the success, opportunity, fun etc which is the image of this country.

What is hidden is the issue of unfaithful matter should be " out " of India. In other word, the director smartly employ other " Spaces’ , other " Societies" to say what is " right" or " wrong". Father , mother always come to remind what to do or what is not supposed to do. Even the agonizing time, Sam who is Rishi’s father still get involved of the matter. This is contradictory of the image of modernity that the director has tried to imposed at the very beginning.

Father is an adult. Son and daughter are always a child. We can see that the self-punishment is consumed for years because the film maker just want to say " Anyway morality is maintained" So no one can criticize.

If they do have the first world’s value, they just go ahead to get divorce. But they still deeply attached
to the root such as the arranged marriage or let’s say forced married. So, we can say that this is the " Half center, Half marginal’ dilemma.

The Half center, Half marginal people believe that they can gain success in the first country. However, they are not fully fixed in the culture of the host country. Dev feel bad that he can not be the bread-winner. Maya would surely has a certain level of education. Why she was so powerless to accept the arranged marriage. I thought she did that to pay back the gratitude she receive from Sam.

Actually, Maya has choices. At the end, she can live on her own. Why doesn’t she start doing thing like that in the first place in the so called free country. I think Daddy would appreciate if you could pay back somehow by other means.

it seems to me that the world in this movie has been divided in to " real’ and " surreal". Ria has tried to hard to achieve. She became the Boss very fast. It is not fair for Ria to be punished. At the same time, Maya always long for the emotional fulfillment. I don’t know if " Maya" means illusion or not but in my language, " Maya" means "Representation".

It is acceptable to the viewer to be on Maya’s side that she can’t love Rishi as they grow up together. However, the technique used here is what I called "Interpellation". I mean the voices of Ria and Rishi are missed because the director intentionally skipped it.

Ria didn’t complaint. Ria is quite open-minded, I think 1 slap is not enough for Dev when he wanted to go away. " Being a man in the house"’s situation is something that is inevitable for Ria. In American society, I don’t think it is very easy for her to achieve. She has a kids and failed husband to take care of.

Last of all, "Colors" are carefully chosen and positioned.
