I remeber about a year ago when people started getting excited for a film which was thought to be the biggest hit of the year. Who wouldn’t think that it would be the biggest hit of the year? Shahrukh
Khan, Rani Mukherji, Preity Zinta, Abhishek and Ambitabh Bachan were all a part of Karan Johar’s next movie. Karan Johar movies have always been touching one way or another. The friendship-love theme was Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, the family-love theme was found in Kabhi Khushi Khabi Gham, and the "live life to the fullest"-love theme was what Kal Ho Naa Ho was based on. Karan Johar decided to try something else and now critics and the audience can define Khabi Alvida Naa Kehna as either a HIT or a DISAPPOINTMENT.

WHY DID YOU WATCH THIS MOVIE?

To tell you the truth, I went to see the movie because I was all excited to see a new Karan Johar movie. I have liked all his other movies and I was waiting to see how good KANK would be. The huge star cast was also somewhat attracting. I really wanted to see what all this hype was.

PLOT

KANK is a story about two different couples. Dev (Shahrukh) and Rhea (Preity) are married and have professional lives. Maya (Rani) and Rishi (Abhishek) are also married. Maya and Dev start to feel that their marriages are not as strong as it should be. They feel a distance with their spouses and feel as though their marriages are not working out anymore and there is so much tension and less love with their spouses. In search of happiness with their spouses, Dev and Maya find each other. First they become friends who found something in common- the want to have a happy married life with their spouses. However their friendship blossom to something else. They start seeing each other more often and realize that they see their true love in each other. Knowing this may hurt their families, they take the biggest risk of their lives.  The result of their actions is a mixture of emotions and feelings and questions.

CAST

Shahrukh Khan as DEV- I must say that by doing this film, he only made his career worse. For hardcore Shahrukh Khan fans I think they would definately love it. However the character he played was a character that was different yet similar to many of his past roles. I didn’t feel a big impact made by him. I am a Shahrukh Khan fan but obviously not a big time fan. I think its good to get some criticism as an actor. That will possibly help him chose better roles.

Rani Mukherji as Maya- First of all, she looked beautiful. But her performance as Maya will not beat any of her previous roles. I think her chemistry with Shahrukh Khan was as usual brilliant. It may sound like I did not like both Rani and Shahrukh in the movie, but that is not true. I think they did a good job but they didn’t do anything to be the show stealers.

Abhishek Bachan as Rishi- This movie has definaltey shown how much he has matured as an actor. He played a young and childish character sometimes in the movie and he also managed to be a serious husband. He was brilliant. This may be one of his best perfomances.

Preity Zinta as Rhea- It was sad that she did not get alot of screen time as Rani did or that is how I felt. I just thought that Preity Zinta, besides looking gorgeous, also has proved that she can act in a different type of role. This time she was the professional, serious, and strong wife.

Amitabh Bachan as Samarjit/Sam- He was definately a shocker. When I saw his initial scene, I was too shocked. I really felt uncomfortable. I guess he was proving that he can do this "sexy Sam" role. Well, he convinced me and has scared me but I think it was quite fun. I really thought his transition fron "sexy Sam" to Samarjit (Rishi’s father) was really sweet and opened up his sensitive and real side to the audience as well as other characters in the film.

Kiron Kher as Kamaljit- She was a good mother. She played a mother who didn’t interfere with her son too much but knew what she should do even if it meant not staying with her son (Dev) and being with her daughter-in-law. I really liked her for supporting Rhea.

Special Appearances

Arjun Rampal
John Abraham
Kajol

Music

I thought the music was beautiful although "Where’s the Party Tonight?" reminded me of "It’s the Time to Disco". My favorite song was "Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna". For some reason that song really touched me and I enjoyed it. Other songs I really enjoyed were "Mitwa" and "Rock and Roll Soniye". After that I liked Tumhi Dekho Na and "Where’s the Party Tonight?"

WAS THE MOVIE ABLE TO KEEP YOU GLUED TO THE SCREEN?

I thought it kept me glued to the screen because I really wanted to know what would happen at the end. I was disappointed by the ending and I felt that the movie could have been made better to make the ending make more sense and really feel a strong impact on the story.

Honestly, this controversial film has not lived to my expectations. I liked the idea. However, Karan Johar could have done a few little things to make the movie more touching and meaningful to the heart. Dev and Maya did not have valid reasons to start an affair with each other and trying to forget their marriages. The way he made the movie almost makes it seem as though having affairs with strangers after being married is just. He also makes it seem as though having arguments with your spouses mean that you can not live together. I just hope that the audience who watch KANK will not be inspired or influenced by this film in the wrong sense.

* So if you ask me if I liked the film I would say that it was different but it did not reach my expectations. The show stealers in my opinion were not Rani and Shahrukh but Preity and Abhishek. Of all Karan Johar’s movies, my number one favorite was Kal Ho Naa Ho. It was funny, serious, and had a message that just inspired me, "Kya pata, Kal Ho Naa Ho".

If you haven’t seen Khabi Alvida Naa Kehna, I think you can wait to rent the dvd. If you absolutely feel that you must watch it, then go ahead and take a chance. You may approve of it or you may feel that Indian cinema as gone too far too fast. Either way, it may open up alot of questions and feelings about marriage. If you watch it with your spouse, it may help the both of you realize what marriage should be by learning from the mistakes and the reponses to the different characters in the film.

Pros:
something new
Cons:
not as expected
