Introduction

Mr. Bean requires no introduction. The role that has catapulted Rowan
Atkinson to an iconic status so much so that he is known more as Mr.
Bean rather than
Rowan Atkinson. So when I bought my Bean combo DVD,
one of the movies on that was Johnny English.

The Plot

Her Majesty’s best known agents from MI7 are all killed in mysterious
circumstances. There is but one survivor and he is Johnny English (Rowan Atkinson). Despite being the inept and goofy, he is the sole agent available for any major investigations.

Soon the Queen’s Crown Jewels are stolen during a party hosted by a Frenchman Pascal Sauvage (John Malkovich). Johnny along with his sidekick Baugh (Ben Miller)
immediately suspect the frenchman, but their boss would have none of
that as Pascal is a considered as the best friend of England thanks to
his large donations at the appropriate moments.

But, Johnny and Baugh keep spying at Pascal and stumble upon a plot
to replace Queen Elizabeth with Pascal. As a follow-up to that Pascal
has plans of making UK the hub of all criminals whom he would supply to
the whole world.

Can Johnny and Baugh save her majesty from Pascal’s true
intentions? Check out this hilarious spoof on James Bond for all the
details.

Critic’s Viewpoint

Bond movies are iconic, hence spoofs are bound to be made on them.
The Austin Powers series is one of the more famous spoofs on the Bond
movies, but Austin Powers is too American to ooze the British class so
to speak.

Step in Rowan Atkinson who can ooze that British class, carry off
those brilliant suits with a tie and bring the classy dry humoured
one-liners into the picture. Rowan Atkinson has such a face and such a
reputation, that just the sight of him makes you roar with laughter. In
this role to suit the sophistication of MI7 agent, he is a bit less
quirkier and less abnormal so to speak, but still manages to keep you
rolling with laughter.

Cheeky dialogs, crazy facial expressions and a combination of good
and slapstick comedy makes the movie a laugh riot from the beginning to
the end. Of course, given the pull of Rowan, the movie swirls around
him and the rest of the cast are spun around him. Ben Miller is
especially good as a adequate side-kick to an inadequate agent.

The direction of the whole movie follows the Bond part to the core,
so the movie starts with a small episode, followed by a song with the
titles. There is also a slim and trim bond girl in Natalie Imbruglia in
the movie.

Summary

All in all it is a laugh riot and a good way to enjoy a nice
evening with the family. In fact, the punchline describes the movie the
best He knows no fear, He knows no danger, He knows nothing. :)

I would give this movie a 4 star rating mainly thanks to Rowan Atkinson.
