I am not going to get into major details of the plot or the storyline of the movie. It has been explained nicely by many posters more eloquent than me. Very briefly then, I LOVED the love story of the
movie, the non love- story part of the movie could be better. In particular the editing could have been tighter.
The songs and overall musical score was definitely a plus for the movie. Although count me among those who found the picturization of "khwaja " a tad unintentionally funny:) But not in a bad kinda way! . "Azeemoshan shehenshah" is arguably the most lavishly picturised spectacular song I have seen in recent memory, definitely worth the price of admission on its own.
The acting was passable all across the board. Hrithik was drool worthy but in some scenes lacked the gravitas to be Akbar. Not bad though . I actually liked Aish in this one. She can do "haughty arrogance" pretty well, which was perfect for Jodha.!
Now to come to the best part of the movie- the romance! oh the romance, the intense chemistry, the sexual tension between the lead pair! The scenes that stand out- Jodha checking out a shirtless rippling muscles Akbar :), the sword fight between Jodha and Akbar which seemed to be a stand in for "other" activities;) and the totally smitten look on Akbars face when he spies on her singing the Bhajan. Then we have the scene where Jodha says Akbars name for the first time. Cant forget the incredibly romantic "in lamhon ke" number. I loved how the romantic tension was building up throughout the movie till its resolution with "in lamhon".
I also loved the underlying secular message of the movie, which is sorely needed in these times. I mean I cant believe the song and dance about this movie. Get a clue folks, its a piece of FICTION .
The cinematography , art direction and costumes were very good. I have to commend the writers for a very imaginative screenplay, since the love story was entirely the writers creation. Ashutosh impresses yet again, although you do wish he had asked the editor to chop off more of the movie.
I have to say that inspite of being a long movie I wasnt too bored, so that says a lot for a 3 hour plus movie.
The negatives- lack of editing, too many subplots, some war scenes were amateurish( the armies in the last war scene looked puny compared to the huge desert), they could have gotten a better SFX to work on the movie.
Overall, I would give this movie a high rating because it gets its central message ( love story of jodha akbar) just right. I can ignore the shortcomings because the good parts of the movie are GREAT!
Definitely a worth watch on the big screen. It will probably get a repeat viewing from me.
