This is one of the best entertainers I have ever seen. Not a single scene in this movie is out of place. It would always rank among my favorite movies.
The Story:
Ramlal (Kulbushan Kharbanda)
is a middle class man, who owns a small hotel. He has two sons Ratan( Manick Irani) and Sanju (Aamir Khan). Ratan is a cycling champion and he is the apple of Ramlals eye. Ramlal wants his son to win the annual cycling championship, which is being dominated by Shekar Malhotra(Deepak Tijori). He works hard to realize his dream through Ratan. Sanju on the other hand is a typical irresponsible teenager, who lazes out, roams around with his good for nothing friends and dreams of getting rich quick.
Sanju and Ratan both study in Model College, which is more of a middle class one and they have a rivalry with the more upmarket Rajput College, most of whose students come from very rich families. Sanju has a childhood friend Anjali ( Ayesha Jhulka) who dotes on him, but he just uses her whenever he needs some help. She loves him secretly, but he dreams of marrying a rich girl. He meets Devika(Pooja Bedi) a girl from Rajput College, who is the most wanted one out there and he lies to her, that he comes from a very rich family and she falls for his lies.
When Devika knows the truth, she walks out on him. A scuffle ensues between the Rajput College guys and Sanju, and his brother intervenes in the midst. In the meanwhile, Ramlal finds out that Sanju has used the money given to him for his own personal purposes and is furious with him. When Ramlal goes to Delhi to buy a new bicycle for Ratan, Shekar and his friends take it out on Ratan and in the ensuing fight, Ratan falls off a cliff breaking his leg
Sanju and his father are heartbroken by the incident. And this proves to be the turning point of the movie. How Sanju redeems the family pride and realizes his father and brothers dream is what the rest of the movie is all about.
Though the story is quite a normal one,its Mansoor Khans treatment that makes it engrossing. Some of the stand out points of the movie are
1) The relation between the brothers is depicted so naturally. Watching this movie, all of us would have been reminded of the scuffles and fights, we would have with our siblings. At no stage does he allow this to degenerate into mawkish melodrama.
2) The scenes of Sanju and his gang bunking classes, playing truant, getting into fights, fooling the teachers is done superbly again.
3) The Choreography of the song Pehla Nasha is just superb. It was a refreshing break from all those latkas and jhatkas.Watch out for the sight of Pooja Bedi doing a Marilyn Monroe here.
4) The cycle race is brilliantly picturized and is equivalent to Hollywood standards. Though the audience knows the outcome of the race, the tension is kept till the end, and in the theater I could see the audience wildly clapping when Sanju wins the race.
5) The family scenes are picturized with a lot of warmth.
6) The scenes where Sanju trains for the cycle race.
On the flip side
1) The villians look pretty caricatured and typically filmi.
2) Devika tells Sanju that she would love him even if he has no money, and when she realizes he is not rich, she just drops him, and this looks quite uncovincing.
3) Also Sanjus realization that he loves Anjali seems so forced.
But these are quite minor flaws and dont take away from the overall movie. The songs by Jatin Lalit are superb.
Pehla Nasha- The Best one. Sweet and romantic, with brilliant choreography by Farah Khan. No 100 dancers in the background or expensive sets here, just the characters and nature. This song would bring us memories of the first time we fell in love with some one.
Root Ke Hum Se Kabhi-Soft and soothing song, which shows the relation between two brothers. Heart warming and touching, you surely would remember the days of your childhood you spent with your brother.
The other songs Shehar Ke Pariyon, Jawan Ho Yaaron and Woh Sikandar are good enough.
The performances:
Manik Irani, the well known model, though a bit wooden in some scenes, gives an adequate performance as bade bhaiya.
Kulbushan Kharbanda as usual gives a superb performance as the father Ramlal. But then this vastly under rated actor, delivers in almost every movie.
Deepak Tijori as the villian Shekar just hams throughout the movie and is quite irritating.
Ayesha Jhulka looks so cute and sweet, and she delivers quite a warm performance, that makes every guy want to have a girlfriend like her.
Pooja Bedi is meant to play the sexy, rich babe and she does it well.
But the life and soul of this movie is
Aamir Khan. As the irresponsible teenager whose life undergoes a transformation and who finally realizes his fathers dream, Aamir gives a superb performance in the role of Sanju Lal. He is the real Sikander of this movie.
