Travelled recently on Abu Dhabi - Mumbai - Bangalore sector on economy class. Since there is no direct flight between Abu Dhabi and Bangalore,
usually I used to drive to Dubai and take Emirates. I believe traveling 160 km from Abu Dhabi to Dubai is worth when comparing the hassles one has to face while traveling on a connection flight especially when you have to change terminals for your connection. This was a newly introduced route between Abu Dhabi and Mumbai by Jet Airways and they were offering excellent connection flights to most of the major Indian cities. After reading mixed reviews on the internet I wasnt sure till the last moment whether to try Jet Airways or not. Since this time I was travelling alone without my family, I finally decided to try Jet Airways. Before booking the ticket I got confirmation from the Jet Air staff that once I clear the customs in Mumbai airport, they will take care of my luggage and they will transfer it to my connection flight on the domestic terminal. Sounds Good !! On the travel day the check in was ok considering it was a busy day at the Airport. The check in staff one again confirmed that they will transfer my luggage to my connection flight. When I boarded the plane, the first sight of the 737 itself was disappointing. The plane wasnt really clean; also I could see lot of fresh stains on the seats. The plane was not of international standard I was feeling like they mistakenly diverted a domestic flight to international route. The plane was full with passengers and the limitations of a narrow bodied jet were clearly visible. The spacious cabin of Emirates 777 flashed in my mind. There was no enough space for the hand baggage and the passengers and crew where finding it difficult to accommodate them. Passengers with infants and children were also having difficult time. I think Jet should operate at least A330 on a route like this. Few minutes after boarding they served bottled "Nimbu Pani". The AVOD system did not work for long time. After some reboots it started working. Few minutes after the take off, they served spirits. There were only two choices available, whisky or beer. Few minutes later they served the meals. Even for the meals there were only two choices, veg or fish. I chose fish. Even though the quantity was less, the food was really Indian and very tasty. I think this was the only best part of the whole journey. After landing in Mumbai, the immigration and customs was smooth. But as they promised, there was nobody to transfer our luggage. We had to carry our luggage ourselves and load it to the coach. I could notice many passengers especially those with children were having real hard time. Lack of coordination was felt through out the transfer. In the domestic terminal I checked in my luggage and walked on to the security check. Alas! A new challenge was waiting for me there. I had a bottle of Johnie Walker which was bought from Abu Dhabi duty free shop and the security didn’t allow me to proceed saying it is not allowed to carry alcohols on domestic flights. I requested them that I am an international passenger, and I have carried the bottle all the way from Abu Dhabi, and no one told me that I can’t carry it on my connection flight to Bangalore. Even after repeated requests they did not allow me to proceed and finally gave me two options, either to put the bottle in the luggage or leave behind the bottle. Since I already checked in my luggage the only option I got was to put the bottle in my hand bag and drop it at the check in counter. I looked at the clock and there was hardly 30 minutes for the departure of my flight. I some how managed to check in my hand bag and be at the boarding gate right on time. So next time when travelling to Bangalore, no more connection flights, no more change of terminals, I would definitely drive all the way to Dubai and take the spacious Emirates 777.
