Story:

Jagdish and the Talking Plant This 47 page by Dr. Swati Shome targets young readers who do not often prefer to curl up with a book about a scientist. Jagdish and the talking Plant will surely entice the most hardened of those children who have been robbed of their love for science.

Format This graphic novel for children is attractively presented with almost each frame an amusing piece of information on nature and its workings

12 Chapters Each of these chapters covers J.C. Bose’s life and his studies.

J.C. Bose Early in the twentieth century, Jagadish Chandra Bose developed a keen interest in plants. Many are already familiar with his innovations in wireless communication. He may be regarded as a forerunner of biophysics as he had invented instruments to study plant intelligence.

This scientist’s journey, in this book, is visualised via the eyes of Mimosa Pudica(the ‘touch-me-not’ plant) about which he had done extensive research. Using extracts from a speech and an entry from Bose’s journal as well as a timeline, the author traces his life with a sprinkling of humour and facts.

The Talking Plant, The Praying Palm Tree, School, England, Home Again, Mimosa’s Decision, The Crescograph, Round the World with Mimosa, The Bose Institute, A Peek into Jagdish’s Journal, The Voice of Life, and J.C. Bose’s Life at a Glance are the names of the chapters.

The Talking Plant tells us about how plants can sense light, sound and send and get signals and other ways in which they communicate.

The Praying Palm Tree tells us about a tree that bowed in prayer! And deals with other such myths.

School This chapter deals with his travails at school as well as how he learns more about nature.

England Bose sets sail for England to do Medicine but changes stream.

Home Again Here, we see what Bose did back in India and how he began inventing things.

Mimosa’s Decision This chapter traces his friendship with Tagore and how his interest in plants was faring.

The Crescograph This is an instrument he invented to measure growth and changes in plants.

Round the World with Mimosa This section is a graphic depiction of all the recognition he got from around the world.

The Bose Institute gives us insight into the birth of the institute.

A Peek into Jagdish’s Journal Snippets from his journal are tastefully provided.

The Voice of Life His speech.

J.C. Bose’s Life at a Glance A cute depiction of the timelines of his works.

Swati Shome, after years of research in cell biology, now provides a hands-on science lab for kids in Pune and is also content developer at NCERT.

Art Anushree Bhat’s work is enchanting and engaging and she has also illustrated other books from Tulika.
