Story:

Infinite just is one of the best novel ever written and anyone who has the guts to approach this humongous book should read it.

The main feature of infinite jest is also the most obvious one, it is a massive book, which is a challenge in itself to read. It is extremely long, extremely complicated and extremely intricated in a very postmodern fashion, it offers a circular structure, a structure that is fragmented.

In the first couple of hundred pages, you wont be able to get what exactly is going on in the novel. You will see scenes from different settings, from different subplots and wont be able to understand how all these scenes comes together. It is a chaos and you have to go through it and while you recognize some character and start to get a hold on this book you will fall for it.

Infinite jest deals with massive amount of themes and to describe a single one it will take hours on my part. In a simple way I can say it deals with American and western contemporary society and struggle inside this society between sharing and solipsism i.e  between opening oneself to new experiences, love, friendship and escaping all this through entertainment and drugs.

Foster Wallace is such a clever guy that even 1000 pages are not enough for him to speak his mind so he ended up adding another 100 pages of footnotes. Even though footnotes do make this novel a pain to read, but it also converted this novel from a passive experience to an active experience, one in which you have to put some effort which is also a part of its theme.

It is a open book where you have to put together a lot of things together before they start making sense and you have to reflect on it to draw some conclusion, but don’t see this as frustrating thing but take it as an opportunity to dive into one of the best written novel.
