The Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), Dhenkanal was established in August 1993, following a recommendation of the State Information Ministers' Conference. Calcutta wanted to grab it arguing that Bengal is and has been the cultural capital of Eastern India. What nonsense. I was transferred from IIMC, New Delhi, and was asked to take over at Dhenkanal as its Resident Director. No house, nothing to start with excepting a bare hall given to us by the Palace at Dhenkanal. This was a weakness. I converted every weakness into a strength. Sent our students, who were from all over India, to all the media organisations in Orissa for training. The forte of IIMC, Dhenkanal was Rural and Tribal Communication. Another strength was Choral Singing. The first batch came out with brilliant results. They were the envy of IIMC, New Delhi. Today they are occupying middle level positions in Newspapers and other Media organisations. I am really proud of my students. I retired from IIMC in September 1996
