V.S. Naipaul builds this novel around the life of a second generation Hindu in Trinidad. Based in loose part on the life of his father, the story recount the coming of age of Mohun Biswas, his marriage m and his subsequent struggle to make a life for himself and his family . Throughout, his efforts are stymied by his own fecklessness and inability to control himself .There failing, combined with the grinding poverty and squalidity of his Trinidadian environment, make for depressing story .There may be some humor here, particularly for those more knowledgeable and interested than I in the Indian diaspora . No doubts that it is a great book, carefully written, but not one I'm glad to have read.
