Firstly, thank goodness that there is this topic on MS!! I thought only I read this book :)

Secondly, this review consumed much of my time writing than the others!

_____

I came to know about JRR Tolkien (John Ronald Reuel Tolkien) and The Lord of the Rings(LOTR) after I saw the lotr trilogy. Actually speaking I am not much fond of book reading and I do not have a library at my home :)

The movie had impressed me a lot! But I thought that this movie missed something -> detailing. Especially the ''finding/making of the ring of power'' and life and adventures of Bilbo Baggins. I was getting real desperate (am too inquisitive) to know more about it and the movie is damn interesting!! Fortunately I did get an oppurtunity to read the book - The Hobbit!

The book took grip of me since the first chapter itself!! I just kept on reading and reading and reading...

Tolkien has created a beautiful world in his mind and has effectively described it by the medium of this book. I will describe in brief about the creatures and important characters described in the book.(So that you develop some interest ;)

A Hobbits - are dwarf-like creatures no more than 3 feet tall. They have pointy ears, hair on the feet and they do not have a beard and live in burrows (The burrows are neat and cosy). They have a colony/village known as The Shire(also known as Hobbiton) in North-west of the Middle Earth. They are living there since about 1000 years after the great battle of the Men, Elves and Orcs.

Hobbits are peace loving, non-magic folks. They dont know what is a weapon. They stay aloof from the outside world. Their favourite hobby - Sleep, Eat and Drink.

(Middle Earth is a primitive Earth, not much is known about it but strange things dwell and happen there!)

The Elves - are magic folks. They are strange but beautiful and resemble men. They never age and are immortal unless slain in a battle or by a killer. They are slowly moving out of the middle earth to the Undying Lands because of the rising of evil things. They are very wise and are peace loving. Yet they are good warriors. They are much skilled in making swords and other beautiful things.

The Elves stayed in three places on middle earth. Rivendel, Woods of Mirkwood and the Land of Lurien(Lothlurien).

The Dwarfs - are short people with beards, they resemble men. They are great miners and craftsmen. Dwarfs used to trade with the Elves in the past times and were friendly to them. They had found a very beautiful but strong metal known as Mithril. They had carved a great city under the Lonely Mountains known as Moria

Men - Men are us :) Some are evil, some are good. Some are farmers, some are warriors, some are kings.

Orcs - are goblin creatures. They are very bad and evil. They are the followers of dark lord Sauron. They are dumb, yet they can kill with dirty weapons. They hate sun light.

Some characters:

Sauron - The Dark Lord. He is the evilest. He betrayed the elves and the dwarfs and forged The One Ring,(in the fires of Mount Doom,) all powerful which can control the other magical rings. He wanted to rule all of the Middle Earth and dominate all life. He was defeated by Isildur in the great battle of the times some 3000 years ago of Bilbo's existance..

Gandalf - He is one of the 5 wizards on Middle Earth. No one knows how old and wise he is, except for himself! He is known as Mithrandir by the elves. He is friendly to all living creatures on Middle Earth except the dark creatures.

Bilbo Baggins(protagonist) - He is a rich hobbit. The richest in the Shire. He is a very strange guy and always wants to stay away from his relatives, specially after his encounter with the Dragon and his adventure with Gandalf. The Shire folks are jealous of his wealth which he had discover in his adventure.

Thorin - is the king of the dwarves and the heir of the dwarf kingdom in the Lonely Mountain. His people were drove out of the mountains by Smaug, a dragon. He owns the dragons treasure too.

Smjagol/Gollum - is a poor little creature who bore the ring for about 500 years. He got mutated because of the changed surroundings he is living in and he has turned very evil. He loves the ring more than himself. He stayed under the Misty Mountains for about 500 years till he lost his Precious.. The ring was found by Bilbo who was out on an adventure with Gandalf and a few dwarf friends.

And here the story begins... Gandalf invites Bilbo to go with him on an adventure - a treasure hunt - along with 13 dwarf companions.. but to win the treasure, they also have to kill Smaug, a dragon. Not to mention the other difficulties they have to encounter outside the much safer Shire to reach the final destination, the Lonely Mountains.

In all The Hobbit, is of about 200 pages, but it enchantingly describes their journey and the many adventures they had on their way to the treasure. One of the interesting part is the contest with Gollum creature which simply baffles you too.

In the end, after a tiring adventure, Bilbo returns to the Shire only to see that all his belongings have been auctioned off!

If I keep on writing, I will replicate this book here itself :p So, magic/fantasy lovers, please read this book! Its too enchanting!

Thanks for reading my review! Do leave in your comments! I would love to read and reply to them :)

Anand.

p.s. All good in this world come to an end and so does this book :(

But there is the Lord of the Rings next to be read!! So that you dont really miss the Middle Earth afterall.

Do not forget to rate and comment :)
