Maybe this review is rather late in the day, as this serial isn’t telecasted anymore. But I couldn’t help myself write a review on it, since it was and will always remain to be one of my favourite serials!

The story was about a group of 12th class science students. They all were what a typical teenager is all about! Full of youthful energy, ambitious, bubbly, naughty, sincere and sentimental at times! The best part of the serial was that there were no major characters in it. Everyone was major! Everybody was equal and each of them had an equally important role to play (which isn’t always the easiest thing to do for the serial makers).

Some of the characters, which are still fresh in my memory, are John, Mona, Alisha, Mazhar, Cyrus, Mehul, Kiran, Alaknanda Madam (their Physics teacher) and last but far from the least miss beautiful Prishita (on whom I had a secret crush)!

Another striking part about this serial was that it wasn’t just entertaining but also edifying! It dealt with day-to-day lives of youngsters and the problems & situations faced by them. It showed the ill effects of drugs and how easily youngsters can fall prey to it. It taught us that sportsmanship is greater than gamesmanship even if you lose in the end. It showed the quandary of a lonely child whose parents had money for him but not the time. It showed the teenage crush a student might have on his teacher. It tried to train the thought in the mind of the youngsters that unity can achieve great things!

Not only this but also this serial dealt with a major social issue – premarital pregnancy! This serial voiced its opposition to the stereotypes who believe that it’s a men’s world and in such conditions women are the culprits. The serial portrayed a brave modern day woman who knew what she was doing and had the guts to follow her heart by going against everyone and not aborting her child! Alaknanda Madam played this role very well and the serial received loads of brickbats. The critics said it’s trying to promote premarital pregnancy. But I think that was ridiculous on the part of the critics. The serial wasn’t trying to promote any such thing, it was just trying to convey that women should be given the freedom to make their own decisions in this men’s world!

Acting-wise everyone was brilliant. I’m yet to see a serial, which contains such natural acting! The background score was melodious and I still hum it every now and then. Aaj Humara Kal Apna, Koyee Mane Ya Na Mane……….! The serial was very very realistic indeed; it wasn’t as if we were in a fantasyland. And that’s one of the main reasons that the viewers were able to attach themselves so much with the characters and the show!

After it stopped, they again tried to begin its sequel, which proved to be a big let down! In its sequel the students had passed the 12th class and were in college! But most of the characters were missing, the story line wasn’t that intriguing and the punch it had in its first part was nowhere to be seen!

Those were the golden days of Indian television. Now the Saas Bahus and Jassis have flooded the channels! There is no such serial, which caters to the audience of my age group. How much I wish that this serial started again. If not with fresh storyline even the old episodes will do! What do you say?
