Well, after watching some good movies of late Ismail Merchant -James Ivory team; I was always attracted to words of their screen writer Ruth Prawer Jhabvala. She was an English Jew married to an Indian. She stayed with her husband for a while and understood India better than many hollywood screen writers!
Undoubtedly, she writes well. Any wonder, this book was a Booker prize winner!
Yes, it is based on romance between an Indian and a British but it also depicts the politics, animosity and suspicions between the ruler(british) and their subject(Indians).
I would humbly recommend my friends to watch movies by director James Ivory and producer Ismail Merchants where she has contributed a number of good stories
