I think everyone has read this book. It is truly a modern novel that can be appreciated by people-men, women and children of all ages. It traces the emergence of a new kind of hero from rather humble circumstances.
Harry Potter is bullied by everyone that he meets and has no inkling of the fact that he is special. That makes his ?charm?, if I may use that word so very irresistible.

Think of it-you are used to being told that are useless and idiotic. And then you wake up one morning to find that you are a celebrity. Albeit in the world of witches and wizards. In this day and age black magic is a matter of mirth. But it was not so a hundred and fifty years ago or earlier. In those days a book like this would not have been possible.

The author JK Rowling has a wonderful sense of humour and wit. She can make you laugh pretty easily and without appearing to do so. She is also an expert at creating suspense. Usually you can do only one of these two things. This novel is about a mystery, its about charms and spells. But it is also about life in a boarding school. Students from various backgrounds are admitted into the school. They make both friends and enemies. They participate in adventures and misadventures.
It is all part of the process of growing up. And this book traces that process beautifully. The setting is both modern and idyllic. On one hand there are the modern gadgets and on another we have all the paraphernalia of fairy tales. It?s a book that works at various levels. On one hand it brings a smile to your lips because you identify somewhat with the talented Harry Potter and on another you are amazed by all the fantastic magic. Lastly, the character called Hermione Granger may be the writer herself. The girl is intelligent, studious and well, a little human.

The story briefly. Harry Potter stays with his Aunt and Uncle, the Dursleys. When he turns eleven he learns that he is actually a wizard. He is enrolled at Hogwarts where he is trained to become a master of spells and charms. Now, young Harry is already famous for battling evil Valdemort as a one year old and winning.

In school Harry joins the Quidditch team. Thanks to gamekeeper Hagrid, Harry and his friends Ron and Hermione learn about a philosopher?s stone being kept under vigil in Hogwarts. Someone is after the stone. Is he being backed by Valdemort who is presumed dead. It is upto Harry Potter to unravel all in the novel ?Harry Potter and the Philosopher?s Stone? by JK Rowling.
