A bit late in the day, this review, considering we bought the CD almost around the time it came out. But, at that time, though we watched it a few times, my 2 year old was very scared of all the rakshas and the accompanying noise, and so it was literally shelved. After a high dose of Jungle Book, part 2, and her having grown by a few more months, my daughter is a bit more brave and has taken to seeing it every afternoon for the last 10 days. That definitely says a lot about the success of the movie - as the primary target is the child and any parent would like the child to watch this movie. In addition to providing for their entertainment, it also satisfies the parents’ requirement for wholesome viewing.

Music is the highpoint of the movie. It is catchy, spirited and enjoyable. Baby Hanuman is cute, to say the least.

As an adult, however, I am not able to view it with the same dispassion that my daughter has and have to nitpick. This nitpicking is not to demean the effort that has gone into the making of the first independent full-fledged animated movie by an Indian company but more to encourage the making of other animations that pay attention to more details.

For instance, from birth to the time of meeting Rama and becoming his devotee, Hanuman is the same size. Please! Couldn’t this have been thought of better? Worse is, he is shown bigger than Rahu and Indra though smaller than the Sun god!!! Incidentally, I was not aware of this episode and had always assumed that he was called Hanuman because of the heat from the sun burning his face.

This brings me to the next problem. Mythological stories when being made into a movie suffer from the fact that populism of such stories leads to too much familiarity and therefore questions regarding the veracity automatically come up. For instance, the episode of Hanuman meeting Ram in their god knows what age. Was it added for the sake of length? Did it add any value? Then the bear and the deer incidents - especially the latter. The hunter comes on a horseback to hunt for deer!!! And what happens to him after the little one is saved? The parrot being threatened by a dragon which pretends to be a pretty bird!!!

The point is, either create a totally novel character and spin any yarn, or make a mythological story sticking close to "facts" as handed down to us. Don’t marry the two.

Also, there is life after Ramayan for Hanuman. The Bhima and Hanuman episode would have added a few laughs.
