Idiocy at its Best!

We all have been bombarded with a lot of dim-witted rom-coms in the recent past. With the humongous success of Bahubali, I thought Bollywood would take a cue and try to make some exciting movies. However, all my expectations went southwards, when I watched Half-Girlfriend.

Well, the movie is based on the novel from our very own Chetan Bhagat( well, that should have alarmed you!). Since we all are aware of the writing capabilities of this writer, I hoped the movie would be at least better than the novel. However, as it turns out, the movie tries its best to be worse than the novel.

The movie’s plot is idiotic at best. We have a guy named Madhav Jha from Bihar( played by Arjun Kapoor). Since the character is from Bihar, the movie-maker has conveniently furthered the stereotypes of a Bihari boy in his character, which is really offending. Madhav does not want to speak English and is very simple. However, the guy is trying to get an admission into the St. Stephens College. Now, that is something new. This guy Madhav spots a girl playing basketball, whose job is to grimace now and again in the movie. Seeing this grimace-dominate girl, our hero is smitten and he now has found the ultimate goal of his life; to get an admission in this college and be close to this girl. Forget, the career goals and ambitions man!

Riya( Sharaddha Kapoor), that grimace-dominated girl, agrees to be Madhav’s half-girlfriend. She goes out with him for movies, sings love songs for him and even makes out with him. However, it is bizarre, that she just does not want that “girlfriend” tag as of now. The entire movie is literally Riya friend zoning Madhav, however, she does have some uses for him

The plot of the movie is superficial at best. Just like in the novel, the movie’s story fails to impress. Both the actors have acted poorly. Shraddha just tries too hard to be a classic rich Delhi kudi and fails miserably. Her accented voice is too awful to bear. On the other hand, Arjun Kapoor just drags through his role. He just keeps on nodding his head all through the movie to Riya’s demands. The other characters are equally cartoonish.

The music of the movie, apart from Baarish, is not worth to talk about. You hardly get the time to enjoy the songs, as there are multiple characters entering and exiting the movie at various points. Avoid the movie and the novel as well.
