Now, this book by learned Pavan K Varma did not impress me a lot.
Partly, because of his claim to represent middle class.
Alas, he hardly understands it and has never experienced dilemma of being educated but financially weak!
How can a member of elite Indian foreign service and son of an Indian civil servant of British India make such a ludicrous claim.
Thus, he hardly understands pangs of middle class.
He squarely blames indifference of middle class to collapse of Indian democracy.
Then, Varma ji is not a sociologist.
Unlike Prof. Deepankar Gupta, a known sociologist, he has not under taken field studies .
One agrees that his other books - The Havelis of Old Delhi, Being Indian -are quite good.
But, one won't recommend it 1
