These kind of repellents never kills but irritates the insects to a certain level so that it tries to move away from the boundary of having the spread of repellent. So the number of avilable mosquitoes will be the same.
Let us take a calculation.
Let there be 5 houses in a residential area. Let us assume that there are 25 mosquitos availabe with each homes . 4 houses are using the repllent and one unlucky family missed to buy a piece. So most probably these 25 mosquitoes from each houses fly away from these 4 houses and try to get accommodation in the available slot which is the 5th family slept without the repellent. So 25 multiplied by 5 means 125 numbers. So this 125 mosquitoes enjoy there heavy feast at the 5th house. The next day they also will be forced to buy one repellent.
So here we are also part of making our neighbors to buy these kind of products.
