Gmail

Gmail – or google mail, an electronic mail service by Google retains all its credit for excellent quality, good service and the simple package it comes in. Gmail has set yet
another milestone.

The prime catch of Gmail is the storage it provides – they offer 1 Gb and the size of the mail box magically increases constantly. I now have a limit of 2.3 GB and yes - it’s absolutely free. There are rumours that the mails will soon come with advertisements, but as of now I don’t get ads with my mail.
It’s not just the size of the mail box – there are a lot of other excellent features it comes with.
1.     Mails are grouped as conversations – so, you’re not confused anymore when you get a one line reply from your friend – you exactly know to which mail he/she has replied.
2.     The search function is highly enhanced and makes it so easy to find a long lost mail – you don’t have to go digging from page to page in search of that great mail you once received – type in some keywords and ‘voila’ pops your mail.
3.     The settings option lets you choose to activate or deactivate your pop features – So, if u’re going out of station and do not want others in your office to be able to check your mail via Outlook, you can just disable the pop support.
4.     Gmail is very much compatible with most of the mail clients like Outlook express, thunderbird etc.
5.     You can choose to delete all you mails from the inbox once they are downloaded to your comp. or you can choose to archive them. With so much storage space you do not need to worry about losing your precious mail – there’s always a copy left in your ‘All mail’ box. You do not have to delete your mails anymore.
6.     The add book is simple to use and you can export or import contacts from your comp in just one click. It also cleverly remembers all the contacts you receive mail from. (you can also disable this option if you want to)
7.     Gmail comes with exceptional spam filters that really work – I’ve been using Gmail for months now and haven’t received one spam mail. You can configure your spam filter settings also.
8.     Gmail is a beta version and you can get yourself an account only with the help of an invitation from an existing user. This way Gmail keeps out all the malicious bots out of their mail service.
9.     There is also a Gmail notifier that you can download. When installed it is just a snug fitting icon in the bottom of your browser window that keeps you informed of your new mails.

The only negative aspect of Gmail that I’ve experienced until now is that it uses both Java script and cookies. Thought it has an option saying view html version – it doesn’t seem to work. It is also not compatible with a number of browsers, even IE6 at times seems to have problems with connectivity to Gmail.

But, if you’re someone who prefers using email clients like Outlook express or Thunderbird – Gmail is the best choice. Pop connectivity is very good compared to other mail servers. Last week I sent a mail 10MB in size with no hassle.

I’m also sure that Gmail will have to offer more when it’s done with the beta testing.

Your comments and ratings are very welcome.
