''Bada Choice, Chota price to Chota Choice, Bada price''

This is what has happened with the changeover.

I remember some three years back when Giant hypermarket opened with Big Gala in Hyderabad. This was the first and biggest of its kind in South India by RPG in terms of complete stuff for Household. When I went the first day of its opening, I just could not enter the place, such was the crowd and I returned back.

It had become a regular place for me to visit at least once in a month to buy everything that you could get for Household. The Price was far less than any other in HYD and there was huge variety of goods to pick from and drive back home.

RPG made all the money and sold the penny to Spencers and they have totally spoilt this Hypermarket. I have moved little far from this place couple of months back and decided that it’s not worth going there for the following reasons.

Garments & Apparels-Garbage stuff

The stuff you find there are much cheaper in quality than what you find in road side shops not to mention the inner garments, very limited stuff. It is simply not worth buying any clothes there. The Tailors who stitch these simply don’t get the fit or size right for anybody.

Capital Goods-Capital Prices

Giant was very popular for low prices of Home appliances compared to any shop in Hyderabad. Thinking that it will be the same now, I went with my freind for buying T.V for him last month. After seeing the price, we thought we should check it out outside as well and to our surprise, we got the unit at Rs 500/- lesser at Digital Shoppy than Spencers. The other bad thing is that there are very few models on display compared to the Outside Units.

Grocery & Food stuff-Gross depletion

This has become a big disappointment for us. There were days when small shopkeepers buy in Bulk from here and sell in their small dukhanas instead of buying from Wholesalers as the Giant price was far better. Whether it is Atta or Grains or Dals, they have increased the pack size and the price as well. It is very hard to find 1 Kg packs in Spencers now.

They keep full stocks only for Week 1 of the month during salary time and then you will not find most of the brands that you want. Discounted prices are gone on all the commodities and you are buying only MRP and a big VAT added to it.

Vegetables & Fruits-Very limited

The Fruits have always been expensive but you had the range earlier. The Vegetables were freash and clean, so I preferred this place over Monda Market. Spencers have reoriented this section and have reduced the quantity as well as variety of vegetables. The best part was you got the right weight even if you want 782 gms of some Vegetable. From four Counters, it has diminished to two now which is a clear indication of where they are going.

Customer Service-Thumbs down

Giant had excellent support staff that was very responsive and efficient. Most of the faces are missing now and the present staff has no knowledge and is totally inefficient.

The falling sales have resulted in Spencers operating only 4-5 out of 17 Billing Counters which was going full string during Giant days.

I brought an Umbrella few months back and they gave one more freely for that. Now both the Umbrellas, I have thrown in Dustbin. Definitely sales is not raining in Spencers. ( Giant used to have 5000 customers a day and 50 cars would have been parked during evening)

Spencers thought that it will bring its Spencers Chennai name from there and in effect it has also brought Spencers Prices to Hyderabad.

“Spencers is surely for the spendthrift”
