Making sequels to successful movies is not new in Bollywood. The great risk to make a sequel is that it would require a rock solid script to justify the decision to make a sequel. Since the sequel generates interest in viewers, it also raises their expectations from the movie to deliver the same fireworks that the previous movie has delivered.

‘Ghayal’ made in 1990 needs no introduction, which was directed by Raj Kumar Santoshi & can easily be rated as one of the finest films done by Sunny Deol. The movie had immense repeat value as it ran to packed houses during its re-release. Therefore, to make a sequel to such a successful movie is always a risk, which could be the reason why Sunny Deol decided to write and direct the movie himself. Did he succeed?

Without wasting time, Sunny began the movie with flashbacks of Ghayal that will certainly take the viewers to the prequel. Ajay Mehra(Sunny Deol) after finishing his sentence is now running a newspaper SATYAKAM that supports the truth, which is explained in crisply written and executed scenes when they abduct Rajguru(Harsh Chaya) & put him behind the bars.

Joe D’souza(Om Puri) a cop from the prequel has now retired & working as a social activist. His soft corner for Sunny Deol was shown in the prequel & in the sequel he still meets the latter. Joe D’souza dies in a road accident along with few others.

Ajay Mehra is popular among the youth & during a prize distribution ceremony, the former gave bravery awards to some students. Four of those students go for photography & on checking what they have recorded; they were shocked to note that accidentally they have filmed the murder of Joe D’souza, who was seen being shot by Kabir Bansal(Abhilash Kumar). His father, Raj Bansal(Narendra Jha), a business tycoon, who almost has everything under his control and home minister(Manoj Joshi) were also present at the scene while Joe was shot.

Kids want to give the tape to Ajay Mehra but their parents want them to forget the incident. Lawyer Kriplani(Sachin Khedekar) father of one of the four kids, hands over the tape to Raj Bansal, which creates complications as Bansal wants the kids as he assumes they must have made a copy.

A copy was made, which the kids now want to handover to Ajay? Will they hand over to Ajay Mehra? Will Ajay Mehra succeed as Raj Bansal has played a trick declaring the kids were working as hackers for Ajay Mehra? How will Ajay handle this case as there is enough resistance from all corners to stop him?

The best thing about this movie is that there is only one song, which is a relief as such flicks do not need songs. The background score from Ghayal is used in the sequel as well and it gives the viewers who have seen the prequel goose bumps. Good thinking by Sunny Deol.

Cinematography by Ravi Yadav is excellent. He has captured the chase scenes, aerial shots, to name a few very well. Editor Chandan Arora has tried his best to keep the length of the movie to minimum by some crisp editing. Production values are top class as every effort succeeds to give the film the look that it deserved.

Among the star cast, Tisca Chopra, Nadeera Babbar, Om Puri, Neena Kulkarni, Sachin Khedekar, Ramesh Deo & Soha Ali Khan does well in their respective roles.

Abhilash Kumar is strictly okay as the culprit son of Raj Bansal. Rishabh Arora, Diana Khan, Aanchal Munjal & Shivam Patil as the four kids make their presence felt but Aanchal Munjal does extremely well among these four.

Manoj Joshi does well as the corrupt home minister. Narendra Jha delivers a good performance, which if noticed by some film makers, he will certainly be seen in some more movies.

Story was always going to play a significant role in the sequel Ghayal Once Again, which does succeed to some extent. Since Sunny Deol shouldered the responsibility of writer & director, he did well to keep the length of the movie under control.

As director, he is in form as he has extracted good performances from the star cast, knew his strength hence executed the action scenes, chase scenes to perfection. The chase scenes in fact are edge of the seat experience. The first half of the movie is fast paced but the second half does fall a bit & the climax though is action packed with nail biting fight scenes, it still lacks the punch.

Despite the flaws, Ghayal Once Again is watchable because of Sunny Deol. Anybody who thought Sunny can be written off, think twice as he can still breathe fire, excel in emotional scenes and we all know when it comes to action, he is one among the best in Bollywood. He used the team from Hollywood to execute the action scenes & the effort is clearly adorable. Sunny Deol is extremely likable and still has excellent screen presence.
