Tips to Writing Technical Books
Feb 24, 2016 01:52 PM 6091 Views

Being a teaching professional in the course of Computer Science and Engineering, I thought to provide some useful tips for potentially desiring authors of technical books from my own experience. The steps to be followed are: 1) Collection of available books in the relevant subject; 2) Survey of the books; 3) Defining the contents and required chapters; 4) Defining the sections in the chapter, writing the contents and including exercises in the end of the chapter; 5) Conclusion; 6) Appendices; 7) Indices for searching contents; 8) List of references.

1) Collection of available books in the relevant subject: All available books in the relevant subject must be searched. It can be done at book stores or in the Internet. If a book has several editions, then preferably the last edition must be chosen.

2) Survey of the books: All the books collected must be gone through to find an intersection in the contents in all the books.

3) Defining the contents and required chapters: After surveying the relevant books, the contents of the book to be written must be explicitly determined and the contents must be split into separate chapters.

4) Defining the sections in the chapter, writing the contents and including exercises in the end of the chapter: each chapter must be split into several sections as per relevance with a continuity of the contents across the sections. After writing the contents of all the sections, a list of exercises must be included so as for the reader to master the content.

5) Conclusion: The last chapter should be the conclusion wherein the summary of the contents must be explicitly elaborated.

6) Appendices: Addition supporting materials must be included to guide the reader in this section.

7) Indices for searching contents:

In this section, keywords for search must be mentioned with a reference to the respective pages on the book in alphabetical order.

8) Finally, the list of books followed along with the respective authors must be included.

This will help every technical book author to my view.
