Reading jodihayes’s review about the movie, I do have to add a few comments to it. The review is a great review, and the movie is an all time classic. Kingsley born in Scarborough, Yorkshire, is actually of East Indian descent. His father, Harji Bhanji, was a Kenyan-born medical doctor of Indian (Gujarati Hindu) descent, and his mother, Anna Lyna Mary, was a fashion model and actress. It is also said that one of his maternal grandparents was a Jewish Immigrant from Russia. Ben Kingsley’s actual name is Krishna Bhanji, and he changed it to Ben Kingsley, fearing a foreign name would hamper his career. He is one of the all-time great movie actors, and it is a pity he has won an Oscar only once. I sometimes do believe that the Oscar Award is over hyped, and does not recognize true acting talents. What more can I say of an award that did recognized Al Pacino as the best actor as late as 1992 for his role in Scent of a Woman.

This movie was the first Oscar for Ben Kingsley. It was also the first Oscar for an East Indian – Banu Athaiya (Best Costume Design). Totally this movie received 8 Oscar awards.

A bit of trivia about this movie is that the funeral scene in the movie was filmed on Jan 31, 1981 exactly 33 years after the real Mahatma was cremated. A lot of Indian politicians did object to the filming of this movie, as they did not want an actor of non-Indian origin play the role. Finally, the scope for further controversy was subdued, as Ben Kingsley was selected for the role. In fact, one of the greatest Indian actors, Mr.Naseeruddin Shah auditioned for this role. Sir Anthony Hopkins also tried for the role of Gandhi. Dustin Hoffman was also interested in playing the lead role in this movie.

Although, Gandhi is not one of my favorite characters, I do admire this great man for whatever he has done during his time, and for his role in the freedom struggle.

The movie is a great movie. Brilliant acting by all the cast members and great direction by Richard Attenborough.
