Richard Attenborough's Gandhi is a masterpiece. Hats off to Ben Kingsley, for his top class performance as the "Mahatma". The scene that really makes a genuine impression is the Dandi Salt March. I started feeling as if, really the Mahtama is walking on the dusty village roads, to break the salt law. Amazing shooting by the crew.

Mahatma Gandhi- A multifaceted personality- Father of the nation- a saintly character- a spiritual leader- a social reformer- and above all the most influencial politician of the 20th century, was nothing less than a magic. Giving justice to each and every personality trait is really a challenging task, particularly in a 3 hr movie. But Richard Attenborough's approach is fully focussed on the political life of Mahatma. He has tried to portray his political carrer in a lucid and crispy manner. Well, there are some more movies directed in Bollywood, one of which focuses on his teachings and ideals, the other one tries to portray his personal relationship with his eldest son, Harilal(This movie, Gandhi-My father is also an outstanding movie).

The movie starts with Mahatma Gandhi's assasination- 30th Jan 1948. After this scene, the gigantic funeral procession of this great man is shown. The dialogues that go on in the background makes the viewer very much inquisitive about his entire journey. The movie then goes into flashback mode and takes you back in 1893. Mahatma Gandhi, then known only as Mohandas Gandhi, goes to South Africa to try his luck there(He takes this opportunity because he's a failure as a lawyer in India and somehow wants to get out of the Indian atmosphere). An incident that happens with him because of color prejudice jolts him and he's bewildered. So, an incident is shown wherein Gandhi is thrown out of a 1st class train compartment. This shot is directed beautifully. Ben Kingsley is brilliant with his facial expressions and postures.

Mahatma Gandhi's tenure in South Africa was the most significant period in his life, as he carved out all his philosophy, principles, strategies and implemented it through the "Satyagraha" way. The movie doesn't glance into much details like this, but Richard Attenborough has ably tried to convey Mahatma's shaping philosophy, by showing a meet of Gandhi with a "Padri" and "Mr.Walker". This is mind blowing. In one scene his principle of equality is illustrated when he calls a coach for lunch at his residence and has a rift with Kasturba, who is not really happy with it.

After avictory in South Africa, Mahatma Gandhi dominated Indian politics for almost 3 decades. The Indian National Congress, which was then having stalwarts like Lokmanya Tilak, Jinnah, Chittaranjan Das, Bipinchandra Pal, Lala Lajpat Rai had 2 wings, namely the extremist and the moderate. When all of these ace leaders were at the helm, Gandhi landed in Mumbai in January 1915. Within a couple of years got involved in ample of things like Champaran agitation, Kheda satyagraha, Ahmedabad mill owner’s strike. The Champaran satyagraha is shot beautifully by Richard Attenborough. The scene wherein Mahatma refuses to pay 100 Rs, creates a genuine impact. Mahatma Gandhi’s speeches were not that rhetoric, they were simple and humble. The director and actor have worked a lot on this aspect. Truly magestic.

The scene that take’s you back to 1930, is that of the Dandi salt march. A terrific authenticity is disarmed in this. His walking on the dusty roads of the obscure villages, conversation with the reporter, picking a handful of salt…everything is just too catchy.

In late 40’s the helplessness of Gandhi is beautifully portrayed by Ben Kingsley, particularly when people from VHP, started developing a wrong impression about the Mahatma. His anguish, helplessness, outrage is shot very nicely. 2-3 previous attempts to assassinate him are excluded from the movie….

To sum up: Richard Attenborough’s Gandhi is a masterpiece…a must see. In today’s era, where people are getting more materialistic and money minded, truth is at stake, integrity is diminishing, people are retaliating with violent acts, Gandhian philosophy can save this world from dilapidation. Thanks to Richard Attenborough for creating  a masterpiece-Gandhi
