This place is nothing but just a very narrow gali / congested street with shops which are famous for their deep fried stuffed paranthas.
This gali at Purani delhi, Chandni Chowk, is so old that once Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and even our former PM lal bahadur shastri have dined here and now Sheela Dixit.
A Panatha sells here by the name of "Shastri Panatha" now .
A handful of Bollywood stars / TV serial personalities too have made their way to this gali and have their pictures hanging inside the shops devouring the paranthas .
Though I am a mumbaikar, my wife is from Delhi and she is my guide when it comes to delhi, she took me to this Gali a few times, I do not exactly remember the name of the place we went to as all the shops look so similar but, I do remember the lane is very narrow and the traffic is heavy.one youtube reviewer has commented very aptly, you either run the risk of over eating here or being hit by a bike . The street looks overcrowded and bustles with energy and sounds.
People who have Agoraphobia which often involves a fear of crowds, bridges or of being outside alone, are advised to stay clear of this place.
I have vague memories of having eaten lavishly here a few times and dishing out very little dough. The paranthas were great, so were the chutneys and the sweet lassi in the kullad(clay pots). The pickles and chutneys to go along with the paranthas are awesome! Some of the offbeat paranthas you will get here are papad, banana, bitter gourd, 16 layer parantha, kaju and rabri ka parantha .Desi Ghee is also used as a filler / stuffing along with the veggies at most times .
Most of the shops have over 40 varieties of parathas served and some of the shops were established as back as 1872. I am told Actor akshay Kumar lived somewhere near by. .
My only complain is that most shops seem a little unhygienic in the cooking area, the oil looks overused and very rancid or toxic and the paranthas were deep fried not tawa fried .
Youtube channel showmethecurry.com owners Hetal and Anuja who stay in the US recently visted India and also this place to cover it on their channel to talk about Indian Street food .
The place isn't glamorous, sophisticated or hep and unless you have an appetite for street food in a desi way , do not venture here . Expect to eat lavishly for a mere 150-200 rupees / person out here
I have left my old unhealthy habits behind and I will think 2 times before indulging in paranthas deep fried in such rancid oils but maybe ill settle for a few bites if am here with friends and family .
But for reasons that I have spoken about in my earlier reviews, I will always distance myself from the MCdonalds and the KFC's of the world . Such Khao Galis are so much more better, I only wish they tawa fried their stuff .
Jaisa tumhara food hoga waisa tumhara mood hoga, your food should be alkalizing, mineralizing and high on the Pranic value or the life force and low on the glycemic index / glycemic load, at least this food is served hot and fresh, since its made then and there and doesn't do any "food miles" like burgers and french fries .
