Rajaneesh is against sex. Review on From Sex to Superconsciousness - Osho Rajneesh

It is one of those books by Acharya Rajneesh (later on Osho Rajneesh) which is very attractive and also very surprising. Another one of his books I read and admired was ''the perennial path''.

Acharya Rajneesh was the youngest professor when he became professor at the age of 25 at Saugar University , Madhya Pradesh. I think by his middle age , he read all Vedas, Buddhism, Jainism and all other religions and even made commentaries on them.

He never wrote any book with pen and paper as it were. He used to speak to his disciples every day three hours from 7 am in the morning to 10 am at his pune ashram. The speech would be later printed in the form of a book and so much of a latest technologies were used at that time that it would translated and printed in German language also at the same time. These books millions of them were in circulation. According to India Today article in 1978 at about 25 crores rupees came in through royalties alone.

It was because of some published photographs in ''Stern'' magazine in Germany that inside story of Rajneesh became famous as haven for free sex. And Rajneesh became much more famous.

But the book ''from sex to superconciousness'' can not be termed as simply ''moksha through kama''. That would not be correct description of the book.

In this book, a dummy size detective novel size book , Rajneesh ( whose original name was Chandra Mohan Rajneesh ) argues that he was against sex !!. He also says that normal sex or sexual energy to be very precise is a charcoal and when it is sublimated it becomes diamond. ( Diamond is just another form of coal )

But how do you sublimate it ?

This is precisely the question Rajneesh tries to answer.

At one point of time he argues that getting rid of sexual desire alone is not the answer. A bull is sexually very powerful. But when you ostracize , it becomes an Ox.

Yes, but what is an Ox ? Has it become pious now ? It is only useless for sex and it becomes a submissive creature without sex power.

So, the more the power of sex within you the more easily for you to reach super conscious state of mind. The only thing to do is to divert this sexual energy by arousing the kundalini. A big boom like an explosion takes place in the subconscious mind which means you have reached the blissful state of merging with the God.

At the same time he argues that at the climax state when a man ejaculates he gets this ''light'' in his subconscious mind. This is the blissful state according to him.

The argument goes on.

The headache for the reader is caused by the same point of argument Rajneesh puts forth with jokes, anecdotes quoting here and there ''what exactly husband and wife do after sex ? '' . For example he would say ''they turn away from each other and sleep, until they get desire again''.

Sexual energy is stupendous energy ,he says. How much stupendous ?

He gives the example of a particular fly in African forest (may be it is called ''go fly'' ). This fly after releasing of semen it simply dies. It was because all its energy was gone. The life spark was gone.

But the better part comes almost in the end .

Then how to manage this sexual urge ? How not to waste it ?

Rajneesh already told us suppression is useless. Totally being dried up emotionally is also useless. In fact you should get powerful desire like anyone who has lust for life. But how to manage it ? And to be very precise how to send to the subconscious mind ??

Here he gives the trick. I think this trick or method seems to work extremely well.

When you get the desire , when you know that it is surging like a wave after wave you just close your eyes. Sit still in asana position like padmasana or simply with folded legs. And close your eyes. Now the important point.

Believe or imagine that your head is an empty room and imagine yourself as looking towards the roof of this room.

What happens ? That is important.

As you imagine yourself looking to the roof of this empty room which is your empty head , you would observe a complete dark halo ( depending on the intensity of your sexual desire ) and within this halo a small spot like light you would see. At the same time within your stomach you would feel a complete coolness.

When again the desire manifests , you just do the same. Again same experience will come.

But finally a light will explode, (according to Rajneesh) leading you to a super concious state of mind.

With this trick however , your strong desire would be definitely subsided until the next wave comes. That much is true.

In any case the book is not for old men or woman where sexual desire was gone long back or very rare to happen.

It also emphasizes the good health ,good food, in fact robust health. It also gives an explanation why temples built on tantrik model have ravishing beauties in the form of sculpture and why mating scenes of Kamasutra on temple walls even though Rajneesh need not directly explain this to us.
