People from my generation love Friends. Which means that people from a generation lower than mine hate Friends? Or may be it means that they simply do not understand Friends?..or whatever that means.

Friends. Who does not have them? And who has not heard of them? Call it an obsession or whatever but I am addicted to Friends?literally and actually. Friends, be it the television series or the actual people that I know. I love them. Here however I shall stick to the most watched sitcom in the satellite television history- Friends.

Friends the famous and the most watched sitcom globally is not an Indian concept. Actually it is nowhere near it. Probably this why if today we try to do an Indianised remake of the American counterpart we would fail immensely. But ten years down the lane I bet it would be a successful endeavor.

By then most of us would have caught up with the americaan culture. Yet Friends with its universal appeal is equally popular with the today?s Indian Mtvish generation. Some are obsessed with it (like me) and even watch the shows again and again and again, much to the amusement and annoyance of their elders. ( In my case there was a time when I used to watch it at 10:00 pm on Zee English followed by 2:00 am and if I missed that again at 8:00 am followed by 7:00 pm on starworld- these are the actual timings. Not only this I guess my obsession has led to piling up Friends dvd?.easily available at all music shops for a price as low as Rs. 199 and in case one wants to go in for a collection it can be purchased at a price of Rs. 499 for a pack of six dvds.---the party just got better for those hooked with Friends!).

In America live-in relationships are common, a fad that is now catching up in Indian metros. However it is still restricted to a particular section. Sex for Americans is like a handshake whereas in India even talking about it is a taboo. Use the word sex in public and just see the reaction?.people give you looks that make you feel alien and for girls it is even worse, an immediate character assassination is on cards if you discuss sex in public. Despite these differences Friends is as much a hit with the Indian audience as it is with the American. I am sure my readers understand why.

For starters I would say, Friends is a television series that does not make much sense yet is absolutely popular globally.

The idea of Friends is very simple. Yet it has worked like magic. (This shows that an idea can actually change one’s life, as it did for the producers and the entire team of friends). There are six friends who live in chic Manhattan apartments and meet at a coffee shop (I guess I should rather say ?Central Perk? lest some of the fans take offence).

They are Monica Geller (played by Courtney Cox), Rachel Hunter (Jennifer Aniston), Phebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow), Joey Tribuanni ( Matt de Blanc), Chandler (Matthew Perry) and Ross Gellar (Davis Schwimmer). These are all who play the main lead. Besides there is Gunther-the guy at the Central perk, who looks gay and actually has a crush on Rachel. Then there is this girl Janice who always screams, ?Oh my God?, whenever she makes an appearance. She is actually Chanlers ex-flame. Also Ross?s ex-wife, who happens to be a lesbian makes special appearances from time to time.

It is but funny, just six characters yet so much different. And if you asked your friends who amongst the six were their favorite, I bet the answers would differ each time. We all like them for different reasons. We like Joey because he is stupid and takes time to reach a joke and by the time he reaches there the viewers are already going mad with bouts of hysterical-laughter. Also his trademark flirtatious ?one-liner?, ?How you Doin?? puts him on a scale close to our hearts.

Then there is Chandler who is funny. (Of all the girls that I have queried, most of them have liked Chandler, because he is funny and straight?not flirtatious I mean?so all you guys trying hard to impress know which department to pull up your socks!). Chandler with his bunny like attitude is cute and popular with both the female and male audiences. He is married to Monica( I like this character a lot).

Monica is smart, successful, dominating, obsessed with perfection (or so she pretends) and is very sexy. She has a penchant to fall for older men ( oh..that reminds me of Dr. Richard). Both Phoebe and Rachel share the view and joke that for Chandler being married to Monica is good but for Monica it could have been better.

Then comes Ross ( Monica?s brother) who studies dinosaur and is living with her sisters queer but persistent cleaning habits. It makes us laugh to be reminded of the thought that Ross?s ex-wife is a lesbian, a fact which Ross was able to discover accidentally while in conversation with Rachel.

Ross falls for Rachel who happens to be a waitress at Central Perk. Though there have been a lot many partner swapping in between before they finally fall for each other only to be separated later. Phoebe the last of them is extremely funny with her dumb charades but is actually very wise. Her wisdom is disguised in her mocking tales.

Like I mentioned before, Friends does not make much sense yet it is the best. It Rocks! We laugh with the six friends and when required we do become emotional. All they do is have fun but during such intervals they teach us through small incidents big lessons of our lives. Not only this a stage comes when we start relating our personal experiences with Friends. I think it is amazing how quickly Friends has become a part of our lives. It is not uncommon to find two young fans reminding each other of the various one liners they have memorized from the sitcom, such is the popularity of Friends.

Equally popular is the Friends title soundtrack. Sung by the Rembrandts it is a naughty and loud track.

Friends does not promise much. It will make you laugh, cry and literally freak you out at times. This is all it guarantees. If you are looking for fun this is the best sitcom to tune into. Watch it for while and the chances are you shall get hooked ?Friends?.

Some of my fav one-liners from the show?

How you doin?

Make me rich!

Phoebe?!(this is when Phoebe introduces herself to Rachel?s sister and she answers-)

Why is she making that funny noise?!

Sense the tone?

Get there quickly?.(Chandler to Joey)

Is that a sandwich?? I said is that a sandwich..?

Chandler to Ross: I just want you to know that if I die you get Joey?.!

I can continue like this forever....
