Story:

Freedom at Midnight is truly a gripping book by its authors. It raises our respect towards Gandhiji to a new greater level and justifies him being called Mahatma. The Book also describes Mountbatten, it was only through his brilliant efforts that today we regard Britsh with respect despite of them being cruel and inhuman to us.

Before reading this book, I was led to believe by other less informed people that:

1) Gandhiji was a corrupt person,

2) he played a major role in the portion of our country,

3) he gave india's wealth(i dont remeber exactly how much.. some 50 corores rupees at that time) to pakistan.

These and many more are just false statements made by some misinformed people. Infact Gandhiji never wanted partition, he even went to the extent to allow Md. Ali Jinha to become the prime minister of India to prevent partion, but this was unexceptionable to the Congress party, who never wanted their foe to ever become prime minister of india.

Gandhi ji was the one man army who prevented communal violence in Noakhli, I wonder how many people are there who risk their life for the safety of their counrtymen. Gandhi ji was the one who took a vow to fast unto death till peace was restored in delhi which he was succefull able to do. Very few people know that  before  partition it was decided that 30% of what was of British India would go to pakistan and the rest would remain in India, this applied to the money also, hence india paid some part of it in advance and the rest it promised to pay after partition. After partiton Nehruji refused to pay it on some logical grounds but since nothing unfair was acceptable to gandhiji he protested it.

Gandhiji knew very well that he was the target of few hindu millitants( as I regard them after reading the book), but he protested the presence of any policeman around. It was through this book that I came to know more and more about mahatma.

The description of Lord Mountbatten is quite interesting. He never wanted to become the viceroy of india which was the most sought after job on earth at that time. His negotioations with indian leaders and Jinnah all show his great abitlity of his decision making and his uncanny knack of arriving at solution of problems however difficult they may be. He was a true human before being a loyal British and a loving indian-- was made the first Governer General of India by Nehruji.

The description of indian prince and princes and their hobbies are quite gripping, it gives the picture of india at that time. The Nizam of hyderabad and his unusual habits are quite intersting to read.

Gandhi ji's assasination is neatly described and was the main motive I read the book. It gives the minute detail into how, when and why the plot was framed to kill mahatma.

Above all it grips the reader throughout and presents history in an interesting manner. The author has done a great work.

A must read book.
