Allright ladies and Gentlemen, I don’t mean to test your patience by repeating the same old prim and propah quotes like- ‘Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder….’…blah blah blah…etc.Give it any name-pulchritude, comeliness, elegance or glamour, beauty still remains an abstract and relative concept.I have shamelessly  ogled at many women on celluloid right from my teenage days  ranging from the legendary Madhubala to the recent sensation Vidya Balan. It took quite some time for me to realize that general demeanour, dignity  and carriage add to the charm quotient of both men and women alike .

The power of Beauty is boundless.History  has it that femme fatale Cleopatra could bring the eloquent  Mark Anthony to his knees.Delilah could persuade the mighty Samson to cut his locks and who doesn’t know the catastrophic consequences  of Helen’s allure?

Without wasting much more time on parading my non-existent knowledge(?)on ancient history and Biblical anecdotes  I will take a straight plunge into this intriguing topic. The following are the women whom I admire as they possess a potent  amalgamation of both beauty and acting talent.

 Shobana

She is grace personified!!I first saw this actress in the Malayalam flick ‘Manichitarathazh”and I was quite overwhelmed by her dignified persona, expressive visage and most importantly- her tremendous aura. Shobana further impressed with her stupendous beauty and historonics in the tamil flick’Thalapathi’ where she successfully matched up with the screen presence of the likes of Rajnikanth and Mamooty. As a demure , Brahmin girl who falls in love with a local henchman she had the bearing of a divine Goddess. While many actresses past their prime resign themselves to fate by accepting passé mother roles , this prima donna once again surprised me with her portrayal of a woman dealing with mid-life crisis in Revathy’s ‘Mitr’.Age sits lightly on Shobana and this national award winner never fails to fascinate me every time she storms the silver screen.

Simran

Simran is much more than just a teen sensation. Her career started with a stale flick opposite Arshad Warsi produced by ABCL and sank at the BO without any trace whatsoever. The failure however didn’t deter this resolute diva…she decided to try her luck in Tamil movies ..and lo behold!!She was successful or what ?Her chequered career comprises of some of the  most entertaining movies like ‘Pammal k Sambandham’, ‘Panchathanthiram’ and  ‘Vaali’.Her superb figure, curves and contours  have left me salivating for more. She can make an indelible impact even in miniscule roles as in ‘Pithamagan’ and the ‘Aaalthotabhoopathy ‘ item number(alongside Vijay). But there is more to this lady than just dancing skills and sex appeal …and she emphatically proved it in Mani Ratnam’s ‘Kannathil Mutthamittal’.Simran is returning back to movies after a short hiatus and here's wishing her all the best in  her future endeavours!

Sreedevi

There is so much that one can wax eloquent about Sreedevi-right from her versatility, profound verisimilitude and a curious pot-pourri of both childishness and sophistication. In my humble opinion she is THE only actress who has actually been able to complement the phenomenal actor Kamal hassan  with such ease that could put even the best of actresses to shame.I first fell in love with this stunner when I saw  ‘Vazhve Mayam’.Her spontaneity left me speechless. Those haunting eyes could express a secret sorrow(Johnny) twinkle delightfully with mischief(Mr.India) or radiate innocence (Sadma). She is also one of the very few actresses who isn’t uncomfortable  in comic scenes.I have seldom come across such a vibrant performer who could leave both the classes and masses bedazzled .How can one forget the magic spell she wove in the song ‘Kate nahin Katthe’ where she not only enslaved the invisible hero but also the moviegoers.

Nutan

I am one of Nutan’s loyal admirers right from my childhood days.I watched a couple of her films on DD and I was totally enamoured not only by her simplicity but also the untarnished depiction of emotions. While most of you may be surprised to see Nutan in this list , I am sure that atleast some of you will with me about this thespian performer .In an era  when Tragedy queen Meena Kumari and the gorgeous Madhubala ruled the celluloid world , Nutan still mananged to tower above everyone with her immaculate acting .It  is difficult to pick just one of her flicks that I like …however I would say that she looked her best in the romantic caper ‘Tere Ghar ke Samne’.No one can escape the charm of this skilful belle in the song ‘Pyar ka raag suno’ where the debonair Dev Anand frolicks with her while  walking down the steps of Qutub Minar.Even as a girl-next –door, she lent a certain authencity to her role unlike the vapid, underdressed vamps we have to put up with today.

Dimple Kapadia

Dimple is one scintillating seductress! One look at her in the movie ‘Saagar’ was enough to make me swoon with disbelief. How could one look so enchanting ? it really beats me!Her long mane, arresting eyes and body language that oozes oomph…sigh!!They don’t make them like her anymore.Dimple started her career with Raj Kapoor’s ‘Bobby’and could carry off the skimpiest of clothes without looking vulgar. She may not be a very popular actress a la Madhuri but whenever she came on screen , she makes her presence felt …casepoint..DCH and Being Cyrus.

Here we come to the end of my short review expressing my awe for those angels who have captured my fancy all these years and will continue to do so.

As for all those prudes who still insist that-‘Beauty is only skin deep”, I will reiterate what Jean Kerr said-. That's deep enough. What do you want, an adorable pancreas? :-)
