Aamir Khan - The Genius Of Our Times

Mr. perfectionist, Aamir Khan started his career as an assistant to uncle Nasir Hussain on films like'Manzil Manzil' and'Zabardast'. He got a break as an actor in his Cousin Mansoor Khan's'Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak', which was a runaway success. Aamir did not have to strive for an opportunity to be a hero in films, at the same time he was humble enough to boost his prospects with talent and a lot of hard work. He picks his roles with utmost care and gives his full to these chosen roles. Critical of every single frame of his films, Aamir is infamous for his attention to detail.

The one thing that comes to mind when you think Aamir Khan is professionalism. You don’t hear any big talks, no big dreams, just good work. No wonder, he is look up by so many of the movie buffs and keeps waiting for his next releases. Doesn't matter if it’s romance in QSQT or Comedy in Andaaz Apna Apna, or a mixture in Dil Chahta Hai or an epic like Lagaan. He just suits them all. One would have laughed if told that he would suit for a role of a strict ACP cracking the Pakistani terrorism network. But one could just not stop.

Omagining what'Sarfarosh' would have been like without Aamir Khan in it. There are certainly some movies which didn't work out for him like Baazi and a few others, but even in them you could see the effort wasn't lacking. I just wish him all the best for all his future projects and I am sure with the sort of professionalism he exhibits he would surely set some standards in this wayward industry which are hard to beat. Since I have seen all his films, it is a lil difficult for me to decide but anyways, here goes -

1.)(1947 Earth)(1999)(simply the most awesome movie on the partition with a jaw-dropping finale - Aamir's best performance me thinks!) Genre: Drama/Historical/Partition The movie, like so many others before it, belongs to Aamir Khan. His metamorphosis in the movie is beautifully shown. His easygoing charm and his way with words capture the audience as they feel that he is really Dil Nawaz, The Ice-Candy Man. His lust for Shanta Bibi is shown beautifully. His reaction at the death of his sister, in the train from India is stupendous. He begins to change from the easy going Ice Candy Man to the silent religious fanatic. I felt, this film mainly focuses on the character of Dil Navaz(brilliantly enacted by Aamir Khan) a person who turns from a cheerful, romantic and simple common man to a person who becomes violent and villainous in his hatred for a sect of people. The 1947 partition riots are an example of a social upheaval that can trigger such a change in a person. As the character says, we all have a lion encaged within us and the day the cage breaks open, God only can save us from the aftermath.

2.)(Lagaan)(2001)(what more can I possibly say in praise of this movie; the movie that changed the aspirations of the folks in the Hindi Film Industry) Genre: Musical/Romance/Drama Aamir Khan is delightful as the enthusiastic Bhuvan. He takes to the role as a fish takes to water. He is one of the best actors of India and people who see the film will see why he is reckoned a perfectionist in India. In short, he does magnificently well doubling as the producer and the protagonist. Aamir Khan, who can easily be named the best actor in Bollywood, has dared to make a brilliant film on an unconventional theme. Bollywood, despite having such a great mass-appeal, has always been very reluctant in handling unconventional, unusual themes. But Aamir Khan, a pure perfectionist that he is, just went ahead, and along with Ashutosh Gowariker, a film-maker who had so far been under-estimated made a Lagaan which will stand as an example for other producers and directors.

3.) Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar(1992)(great film with an awesomely shot climax!) Genre: Action/Drama/Romance/Comedy This is a very cute(I could not find another equally suitable adjective) movie that realistically depicts the life of small-town kids who belong to homes with limited means. It's a story of their pretensions and frustrations, their wish to be part of the richer folk, that of affectionate families, and of budding puppy-love. Due to very good performance by every artiste, this movie - with a quite simple storyline - is capable of making everyone feel part of the movie. Aamir Khan who's the soul of the movie. As usual, the actor gives a marvellous performance as Sanju. Three cheers for this actor who's defied his chocolate boy looks to emerge as the most -varied actor of his time.

4.) Akele Hum Akele Tum(1995)(this is a film all about performances and the earnestness of the actors. Genre: Musical/Romance/Drama Although there weren't any English subtitles I totally understood the movie because of the wonderful acting! The story was good and I like the last song Aamir Khan sang “Why did you break my heart? Why did we fall in love? Why did you go away, away, away.?” Aamir Khan is a very skilled actor that did a great performance all through the movie; he expressed the characters' emotions perfectly. Whether the character is mad, happy, or sad. AHAT is a dream movie. Director Mansoor Khan was in full form and he gifted us a movie of lifetime. Though the movie was inspired from Hollywood flick'Kramer vs kramer' it had its own way of conveying thought. Aamir Khan deserves an award for the effort. He really brings life into the movie and makes you feel what he is going through. This movie gets very emotional when the couple move to court over the possession of the child and here Aamir Khan is simply superb.

5.) Andaaz Apna Apna(1994)(the zaniest Hindi movie I have seen - great performances by everyone with some funny as hell one liners) Genre: Comedy Andaaz Apna Apna is by far my second favourite comedy of all time, first being Namak Halal(even though that was technically a drama). Story is nothing groundbreaking, but the complications that are added to it make it awesome. Aamir Khan is a total cartoon. Just watch his expressions in the song Yeh Raat aur yeh doori. He is amazingly good at comedy. My favourite scene in the film is without a doubt the'Kaali mirch ki laddoo' scene and the 2 scenes following it('Dekha hai pehli baar' and'Oranges'). I can honestly say that there is not one single line in this film that I do not love. I know the entire dialogue of the entire film by heart and can recite it on the top of my head. It's very rare that I love a film that much, so that puts Andaz Apna Apna on a very high ranking. Ha-ha. Think Aamir was 10 times more noticeable than Salman in this movie though. I think this is one of my favorite Aamir Khan performances, I wish he did more slapstick stupid comedies nowadays! I am the type to like Aamir in roles like this and his role in Mela! I know it's not everybody's cup of tea, but it's something I rather enjoy watching!
