Malyalam movie industry seemed to be blessed by some real good comedy movies in the 1990s. Boeing Boeing, Vandanam, Hello My Dear Wrong Number, Mazha Peyyunnu Madhalam Kottunnu, Kottayam Kunjachan, Chitram, Vadakku Nokki Yanthram, Aram + Aram = Kinnaram, Kilukkam, Praadeshika Vaarthakal, Akkare Ninnoru Maaran, Poochakkoru Mookuthi (Hungama), Odaruthammava Aalariyam (Nayee Padosan) etc were only some of them.

There were some good comedy movies released in the last few years, like C.I.D Moosa and Udayanaanu Thaaram, but none of them lived upto the standards of those early ones. Most of the newly releasing movies seemed to have some poor comedy. But these five movies were the source of some of the greatest humour ever.

5) RAMJI RAO SPEAKING

The Malayalam version of Hera Pheri released in the early 1990s was nothing more than a laugh riot. It tells the story of three people having financial difficulties and one phone call, a wrong number changes their lives. That just gave them a chance to be rich.

The movie got some extremely funny dialogues and Innocent (played by Parwesh Rawal in Hera Pheri) has done a fantastic job to make the maximum humour out of it. Mukesh and Saayikumar also have done a fantastic job. This being one of the earliest comedy movies I have seen, is certainly among my favourites.

4) YODHA

Ashokan (Mohanlal) and Appukuttan (Jagathy) are bitter rivals and they always challenges eachother for different games, but the fact is that always Apukuttan loses. All of a sudden Ashokan is supposed to go to Nepal to see his uncle and then Appukuttan gets in their in Ashokan's name.

After that a series of incidents occur, but finally the movie turns into an action movie with the villains getting into the act. But the first act, I have to say, is really funny. This certainly is a different type of movie in Malayalam. The music by A.R.Rehman is great too. I always loved to see Mohanlal in comedy roles in those days - he does suit those kind of roles really well.

3) IN HARIHAR NAGAR

The movie features four jobless, wandering young men (Mukesh, Siddique, Jagadish and Ashokan) who wants to win the heart of a girl who has just arrived in the neighbourhood. But all their plans go in vain and they land in trouble. They take some really funny methods which manages to backfire and makes their job even more difficult.

The way in which these people try to peek into the girl's house and working out sentiments can be termed as the highlights of the movie. The movie takes another turn when they lands themselves in bigger trouble, as they are hunted by both police and a mafia don. All the four have given us a series of funny moments, especially the dialogue - ''Thomas kutty vittoda'' stays in our minds.

2) KOUTHUKA VAARTHAKAL

Mukesh stars in the movie as Mathew Nayanan Koshi, who keeps running after almost all the girls he see. He stays with his three other friends played by Siddique, Suresh Gopi and Maniyan Pilla Raju. The problem is that he finally falls in love with one girl, but the past does haunt him.

Mukesh had been really wonderful in the movie and the way in which he does comic roles is worth mentioning. The scenes with Ranjini, especially in the phone are extremely funny. The tricks that he plays to win the hearts of women forms the major part of the movie.

1) NADODIKKAATU

Two young jobless young men (Mahoanlal and Sreenivasan) tries to get to Dubi, but gets cheated and they land in Chennai instead. There a mafia group mistakes them as C.I.Ds and after a series of misunderstandings and confusions, they manages to kill the contract killer who was sent to kill them and also capture the mafia don and become real C.I.Ds.

The Mohanlal-Sreenivasan combination has done wonders to the movie. This movie was followed by two sequels Pattana Pravesham and Akkare Akkare Akkare. All the three were really interesting and will not let you escape without laughing.

Note:-I would like to thank all of those private bus owners in Kerala for this review. If there was no indefinite private bus strike, I would have never had the opportunity to write this review. Hope they give us some good indefinite ''strike'' holidays every month - ''HAPPY BUS STRIKE TO ALL'' - this sounds like Happy Christmas, doesn't it?
