My Best 5 from the land of Action flicks
Sep 14, 2006 12:12 AM 24363 Views

I seem to be loving this Best 5 series :).

Hollywood has a comletely different agenda for making action movies. There are categories of action movies to look at, first there is the"gun fire" movies, then there are "chase" movies, then we have "serial damage" flicks & so on. But a very few movies actually encapsulate all these elements & yet bring us to the edge of our seats. I love action movies a lot, especially when theres a lot of car chases involved. They are timed to perfection & we get to see some incredible camera work out there. If at all you hold a camera in front of a raging car & film it ,drive past you, you would know the perfect timing required to actually bring that torque on the screen.

Here's a list of my favorite 5 action flicks:

Flick # 1:

Terminator 2: Judgement Day

This is THE grand daddy of all action movies. This movie says to all the action movies out there, "asta lavista baby". One of the finest & the most engaging action movies I have seen till date. This is the material that wins oscars & it did win 4 of them. WIth such detailed cinematics & never die action, it will always be my most watched movie. As the story continues, the cyborg sent by John Connor from the future, this time, to protect him rather than destroy his existence faces his worst enemy. The T1000 is a beautiful character played by Robert Patrick. Using beautiful not in the aesthetic sense but in a appreciative sort of a way. I loved the way he just regenerates all his body parts. The graphics are highly believable& Arnold looks like an unstoppable force, like a battle tank. The movie looks appealing only because Arnold plays terminator. His signature one hand shot gun blasts riding on his bike to his hand gunblast of the frozen T1000, are all wonderfuly executed. This gung hostyle action movie always works on the big screen & it is a delight when directors like James cameron make it to perfection.

Flick # 2:

Kill Bill Vol. 1

I had seen Quentin Tarantino's work before this one, in the form of Reservoir Dogs & Pulp Fiction & became a follower almost immediately. This guy has style. He makes movies so well that even he cant beat himself if he remakes them. Kill Bill opens with a line saying, "Revenge is a dish best served cold", but this movie is far from being cold. Its a solid adrenalin rush with superb sword fights. I was at the edge of my seat in the cinema hall waiting to see what she does to her next victim. People complain that there is too much blood in this movie, but thats what the story demands. This is the best revenge flick I have ever seen. Paying tribute to bruce lee by making Uma Thurman wear the famous yellow suit from Lee's Game of Death, its fantastic to watch Uma swing her sword eliminating the crazy 88's oneby one. The first scene comes more like a Into-the-face kind of action, when suddenly Uma gets out of her car & knocks on the door &the next you know, she is throwing punches & kicks. This is a very fast movie but also knows when to slow down for the story & the characters to build. This one action movie I recommend all the time& gets a place in my top 5 effortlessly.

Flick # 3:

Run Lola Run

This is not mainstream action, but this is another of those adrenalin pumping movies. Its chasing the time. I had never seen Franka Potent on screen before this flick & I loved the way she played the part of Lola, to perfection. There is not a single moment in the movie that slows it down except for the lapses in between two sprints where Lola speaks to her boyfriend in bed with the red lighting mixing her hair with the background. The red hair was a fantastic choice, thats what makes her character more catchy & you seem to follow all the movements she makes on screen. This movie is often called as "a 90 minute music video". It has a fantastic music score that keeps your feet tapping thru out the movie. The amazing dance numbers sort of sync with Lola's movements & believe me, its a fascinating experience to watch on the big screen. The story is dead simple, guy loses bag + guy will be killed if he fails to deliver the money on time + Lola feels its her fault because she had promised to pick him up with the cash + she wants to repay his employer & save her boyfriend's life. This movie runs in three parallel plots, she makes the run of her life inall three of them. Its magnificent to see such a simple story take shape on screen & entertain you. I honestly didnt bat an eyelid thru out each of Lola's sprints. The camera work is highly admirable & you can notice the efforts went behind running along the streets of france for so long.

Flick # 4:

Desperado

This is a master piece in El Mariachi form. Can anyone honestly tell mehow many bullets are actually fired in this movie ? There are scenes of not killing, but bullet baths. Robert Rodriguez's clear choice ofAntonio Banderas, the Guitar playing trigger happy guy whose sole purpose in life is to hunt down Butcho, is evident from the movie's success. This movie is about revenge, guns, bullets & the spanish guitar. Which action flick is complete without a girl to kill for ? This one has it in the form of the sultry Salma Hayek. The highly appreciated "bar gun firing" shot is one of my most favorite scenes from this flick. Theres not much to watch apart from the gun fire, the babe & the banderas, but this is worth sitting thru the full running length. Its gun battle like never before. With the brilliant use of spanish guitar in the backdrop of some scenes gives this movie an elegant style. So the combo definitely works, Guitar + guns + babe +banderas. Cheers to Rodriguez.

Flick # 5:

I am dying to write atleast 20 names under this flick no 5 because there are so many great action movies that I havnt mentioned in this list....which again makes it a fairly biased one. But this one is my personal favorites in a very different kid of action movie type. This is the legendary...

Gladiator

This is completely out of the box film making. Solid work by all the actors & I am too small to comment on it. Hats off to gladiator. Another from the list of my most watched action movies.
