Comedy films are made to elicit laughter from the audience. These are lighthearted screenplays crafted to amuse, entertain, and provide enjoyment to all classes of people. Comedies are created from day to day situations, typical frustrations in our life, and some characters we have come across in our life.
These factors are used to provide fun and merriment and a momentary short time escape from day to day' monotonous and boring life. It is extremely difficult to make people laugh and so, making good comedy films, giving natural laugh, is difficult to produce.I am giving a brief review of the five best comedy films of bollywood
1.Chalti ka naam gadi- This is a true classic comedy formed by a simple story, directed by Satyen Bose. The most wonderful melodious music, great acting of all the cast, and is phenomenally hilarious. There are three brothers(Ashok Kumar, Anup kumar, Kishore Kumar)running garage business of their own.The eldest brother remains away from all the girls, as he was jolted in love earlier by a rich girl.He expects
his younger brothers also to remain away from girls in view of his own
tragic experience. But the younger brothers fall in love one by one and
they want to get married to their girlfriends. The elder brother is
really angry and does not agree to this. The villain(K.l. Singh)enters the plot and he kidnaps the girlfriend of the youngest brother.
It is learnt that this villain has kept the love of the eldest brother
in prison. The end is full of comical action and all gets well in the
end. All the songs are the high light of the film and are still popular
in the world of Hindi cinema. The real hero of the film is 1928 model,
Chevrolet car, which helps all three brothers in their day-to-day life.
The scenes of car race are really hilarious and make one and all laugh.
Though, the film is in black and white, it is very interesting and
funny, most of the times. The lead performance of Kishore Kumar, and
Madhu Bala is the best along with the very vital supporting role of
great veteran Ashok kumar, as the eldest brother. It is really a
lifetime experience to watch this Hindi film that cannot be forgotten
for years to come.
2. Golmal-This comedy film, directed by the king of comedy films,
Hrishikesh Mukherjee, is immensely witty and
hilarious. The situation of the film makes Golmal one of the most
favorite Comedy films of all times. Utpal Dutt, with his impeccable
comic dialogues tops the cast easily. The story revolves around Ram
(Amol Palekar) who succeeds in getting a job at the company of Utpal
Dutt after lot of efforts by changing his appearance to simple,
old-fashioned boy that is liked by his master. Incidentally, Utpal Dutt
catches Ram in his original attire and is very angry. Ram somehow
convinces him that it was actually his younger brother Laxman and not
he. This leads to number of highly comic situations between Ram,
Laxman, and their master Utpal Dutt. Ram teaches music to Utpal Dutt's
daughter on his insistence as Laxman and falls in love with her. She
loves him but hates Ram due to his simple image, while in reality both
Ram and Laxman are one and the same. The climax scenes make everybody
laugh to their heart's content. Amol Palekar is the best and creates
laughter throughout the film and so as Utpal Dutt. If you want to get away from all tensions and worries of the
world, see this movie and you will forget all of them. This film portrays the finer sensibilities that a comedy should have and still has audiences laughing.
3. Padosan- This is a bollywood film having drama, melodious music, and most of all, comedy. The
film makes us laugh throughout for around three hours. All the comedy
kings of Hindi cinema like Kishore Kumar, Mehmood, and Sunil Dutt are
in the main cast in this film.Bhola(Sunil Dutt) is a simple-minded
young man who has taken a vow to live as per Hindu shatras without
marriage up to the right age.He meets lovely Bindu(Saira Bano) and
falls in love with her. Bindu moves in next to his house by sheer coincidence.Bhola's friends Vidyapati(Kishore kumar),
Banarasi and others, belonging to an acting group, help Bhola to get
Bindu attracted to him. Bindu starts loving Bhola but there are some
unexpected twists and turns in the story and all lies of Bhola are
exposed. This makes Bindu again to return to her old plan of marrying
to master Pillai. The climax takes us all to a lovely trip of humor and
finally Bhola gets his love. The theme is really funny and some scenes
are extremely hilarious.
4.Andaaz apna apna- AAAdirected by raj kumar santoshi, is a goofy story of two good for nothing guys trying to outsmart eachother
in their attempt to marry the ‘London returned’heir of a rich diamond
merchant.Aamir Khan excels as
expected but neither of the heroines are tolerable.Perhaps the only film in which Salman Khan’s buffoonery is
tolerable.
5. Chupke chupke:
A superb example of popular actors being well used in a top-notch comedy was Mukherjee's all-time favourite classic Chupke Chupke, *which starred Dharmendra, Sharmila Tagore, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya, and Om Prakash. How can one forget Amitabh's aap log to kuch samajthe hi nahi hai! and also the scenes in which he is desperate trying to keep up appearances as a married man while desiring to woo Jaya Bhaduri were *brilliant
I also like angoor, Gulzar’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s Comedy of Errors, a comedy about two sets of identical twins and of course each being mistaken for the other twin
