Jagjit Singh started his music career composing jingles for advertisements. Very few people know that it was Jagjit Singh, who composed the jingle Tandurusti ki Raksha Karta Hai Lifebuoy. Later he shifted to Ghazals where he has proved that he is the best in India.
Jagjit Singh has given a new style of ghazal singing, ghazals with westernized rhythm and instruments. He improvised on Congo and Guitars and has done that successfully.
If you ask for my favourite five ghazals, the list goes like this:
1. Ahista Ahista
Written by Amir Minai, this ghazal was the one which put Jagjit Singh on top of charts and established him as a class ghazal singer. This ghazal has the essence of good ghazal singing, mixed with guitars and beautiful poetry. The best part of this ghazal is that it doesnot loose rhythm. The voice of Jagjit is superb and thus the ghazal is a masterpiece.
Wo bedardi se sir kaaten Amir aur main kahoon unse
Huzoor ahista, ahista janaab, ahista ahista
2. Baat Nikalegi
Another gem from Jagjit's collection. This ghazal is my all time favourite. The best part of this ghazal is obviously Jagjit's voice. With only a few instruments playing in the background, it is very difficult to sing with emotions and convey the meaning of the ghazals. Thankfully Jagjit has delivered it extremely well. After nearly 25 years of its release, this ghazal is still present in all the'Best of' kind of collections of Jagjit Singh.
Baat nikalegi to phir door talak jaayegi
Log bewajah udaasi ka sabab poochhenge
Ye bhi poochhenge ke tum itni pareshaan kyun ho
3. Phir se mausam bahaaron ka
Written by Zahid, and taken from the album Visions II, this ghazal is again one of my favourites. The ghazal goes like this:
Phir se mausam bahaaron ka aane ko hai
phir se rangeen zamaana badal jaayega
The song talks about the winds of change and this song is in my list because you can feel the same in the singing of Jagjit Singh. There is a happiness in his voice which perfectly matches with the lyrics and thus make the ghazal a delight for the ears.
4. Apni Marzi Se
Apni marzi se kahaan apne safar ke hum hain
Rukh hawaaon ka jidhar ka hai udhar ke hum hain
Composed by Talat Aziz and taken from the album Mirage, this ghazal was first composed for a T.V. serial. Later it was included in Mirage. What can I say about this ghazal, I can only say that Talat Aziz has been singing this one in his live concerts after its massive hit. The vocals are too good especially when Jagjit sings *Waqt ke saath hai mitti ka *. The lyrics are very good. They relate to the identity of us all. A very good ghazal indeed.
5. Munh ki baat sune har koi
Taken from the album In Sight, this ghazal was first composed for the T.V. serial Neem ka ped. Later it was included in the album. This is a softly sung ghazal which shows the pains portrayed in the https://lyrics. The best portion of the ghazal which I like and which has really brought tears in my eyes are:
Woh mera aaina hai aur main uski parchhai hoon
Mere hi ghar mein rhta hai mujh jaisa hi jaane kaun
Some more ghazals which I would like to mention are *Tum itna jo muskura rahe ho, Gham ka khazaana tera bhi hai(Sajda), Bas ek waqt ka khanjar(Unique), Ab main ration ki kataaron mein(Cry for CRY), Wo khat ke purze uda raha tha(Marasim), Huzoor aapka bhi ehtaraam, Gulshan ki faqat, Kagaz ki kashti baarish ka paani.
Actually you cannot confine the greatness of a maestro into a list of mere 5-10-20 ghazals. I require to write a full list of 100 ghazals in order to do some justice to his immense talent.
