!*~ Century Celebration with Ghazals & Jagjit ~*!
Aug 28, 2007 10:23 AM 25034 Views

uski bebaad si baatein.

jaise sardi ki ho raatein.

uski tanhayee yeh masti.

jaise toofan mein kashti.

Here I’m waving my hand, accepting standing ovation, caressing MS writer’s pad and diving with excitement. Yes,completion of my century(on MS) prompted this jubilation. It took around 3 years to complete my century which is surely a milestone for me. I’m trusted by 100+ fellow MSians and my reviews have been read 1, 00, 000+ times* which adds a sense of responsibility and I always try to abide by this.

When I thought what to write as my 100th review I had so many topics in my mind. Writing Reviews on Mouthshut, Internet Friendship were some of them. Then I thought, let me celebrate this special moment with Ghazals and Jagjit Singh. Ghazals are always special and when it comes from Jagjit Singh, it gets a place directly in our heart.

Prior to my graduation I never heard Jagjit Singh. During my gradutation I used to like some of his soft songs like, “Hum to hain pardesh me desh me nikla hoga chand ho” and “Woh kaagaz ki kasti woh baris ka paani”. Slowly I started liking his love songs like, “Hooton se choo lo tum” and “Tera chehra kitna suana lagta hai”. Then came a time when I used to listen all his serious, situational and sad songs. It was a gradual progress and I started feeling the depth of his songs. I remember one incident when one of my friends had told me, “You need to be in love to understand Jagjit Singh. Once you are in love your likes and interests change like anything”.  Now I understand that there’s no way to understand it but to go through it. Once you are in, there’s no way to come out.

Let’s talk about Ghazals and Jagjit Singh before moving for choices.

The ghazal is a poetic form consisting of couplets which share a rhyme and a refrain. Each line must share the same meter. Ghazals are traditionally expressions of love, separation and loneliness, for which the gazelle is an appropriate image. A ghazal can thus be understood as a poetic expression of both the pain of loss or separation and the beauty of love in spite of that pain.

*Jagjit Singh

*-         *Born in Ganganagar, Rajasthan on February 8, 1941

-         *Father: Sardar Amar Singh Dhiman

-         *Mother: Bachchan Kaur

-         *Siblings: 4 sisters and 2 brothers

-         *Wife: Chitra

-         *Nick name(family name): Jeet

He learnt music under Pandit Chaganlal Sharma for two years in Ganganagar, and later devoted six years to learning Khayal, Thumri and Dhrupad forms of Indian Classical Music from Ustad Jamaal Khan of Sainia Gharana.

Jagjit Singh brought Ghazal to the masess which was restricted to only elite classes. He also changed the music of Ghazals by mixing western instruments with Indian classical music.

1. Tum Itna Jo Muskura Rahe Ho: A demand of the situation, where you have a smile on your face but you are down inside, is rightly conveyed by this song. It goes through your inner feeling and it also shows your outer expression. We pretend to be happy when we are too sad. We try to hide our grief with a smile but somebody always gets what’s going inside us.

ankhon mein nami, haseen labon par,

kya haal hai.kya dikha rahe ho,

kya gham hai jisko chupa rahe ho,

tum itna jo muskura rahe ho.

2. Hontoh Se Chhu Lo Tum: This would be my all time favorite love song. It’s so touching and emotional. This portrays love above all relations above all experiences. It takes you in a heavenly emotional world where you can’t see anything but love.

na umr ki seema ho, na janmo ka ho bandhan,

jab pyar kare koi, to dekhe kewal mann,

honton se chulo tum, mera geet amar kar do,

ban jaao meet mere, mera preet amar kar do.

3. Tumko Dekha To Ye Khayal Aaya: When you want to praise somebody with showing the importance of that person in your life this could be the best song. Gratification is depicted in a very nice manner through this song.

ham jise gunguna nahi sakte,

waqt ne aisa geet kyon gaaya,

zindagi dhoop tum Ghana saaya,

tumko dekha to yeh khayal aaya,

tum chale jaaoge to sochenge

humne kya khoya

humne kya paaya

4. Shaam Se Aankh Me Nami Si Hai: A typical sad song when you remember somebody and s/he is not with you. You want that person to be with you but you know it can’t happen. Time is always changing like the life of a person and this song says it all.

shaam se aankh me nami si hai

aaj fir aapki kami si hai

dafn kar do hume ki sans mile

nabz kuch der se thami si hai

5. Hoshwalo Ko Khabar Kya Bekhudi Kya Cheez Hai: You can understand love only when you are in love and this statement is beautifully explained in this song. If you want to live your life, if you want to understand it then you must fall in love. It is said that silent love is the purest form of love and this song depicts the same.

hum labon se keh na paaye, .unse haal-e dil kabhi.

aur wo samjhe nahi, .khamoshi kya cheez hai.

ishq ki jiye, fir samajhiye.

zindagi kya cheez hai.

There are so many other good songs of Jagjit Singh and we can write pages about them. Some other songs which can be included in my list of top five are:

Tera Chehra Kitna Suhaana Lagta Hai

Tere Aage Chaand Puraana Lagta Hai.

Aag Ka Kya Pal-do-pal Mein Lagti Hai

Bujhte Bujhte Ek Zamaana Lagta Hai.

Yeh Daulat Bhi Lay Lo Yeh Shohrat Bhi Lay Lo

Bhalay Cheen Lo Mujhse Meri Jawani

Magar Mujh Ko Lauta Do Bachpan Ka Sawan

Woh Kagaz Ki Kashti Woh Barish Ka Paani**.

*Tere baare mein jab socha nahi thaa

Main tanha thaa magar itna nahi thaa

Teri tasveer se karta tha baatein

mere kamre mein aaina nahi thaa

Samander ne mujhe pyaasa he rakha

main jab sehra mein tha pyaasa nahi thaa

I might have forgotten some good songs but this what I could remember as of now. Thanks for your patience reading. Please share your views in comment section.
