A lubrication leak. A scary roller-coaster ride. And a carnival. Wendy Christensen clicks away to glory, but not for long.

Wendy, currently in the back seat of the roller-coaster ride, braces
herself for a ride of death. As the ride spawned into fear, the inevitable occurs as the rollers lose control. Students flying, crying, and dying in horrible accidents – one of them crashes into a pole. And Wendy’s life flashes before her eyes as she drops down, face to face with the final moment of her life.

D, the force of Death, is about to plant the kiss of fatality on her.

A premonition.

the Plot ...

Final Destination 3 takes on the reins of the story of D that vanquishes anyone in its path. Wendy’s premonition got her and a fortunate few off that killer ride, but Jason, her boyfriend, didn’t make it. Neither did Carrie, her best pal. Which leaves Wendy lonely, to face D all alone - almost. Kevin, Carrie’s boyfriend, shared that lucky back seat, and with Wendy, go on investigate what’s going to happen to their lives.

D looks back only to find its design in a mess, forcing a desperate set of attempts to untangle and get back on track. These desperate attempts translate into freak accidents that lead to horrible deaths of those who survived, in the order that they would die.

Ignoring Kevin’s theory of similar incidents with Flight 180 (Final Destination 1), Wendy realizes a tad late that D is back to haunt their lives. Ashley and Ashlyn are burnt to death in a tan capsule, and Wendy starts to believe.

And a breakthrough. Abraham Lincon’s final photograph – a line across the forehead. The shadow of an aircraft on the twin towers. Wendy clicked photographs, remember? She can use them to predict their freaky deaths.

Alas! D is far more creative, and faster.

I won’t reveal the rest of the plot here – this deserves a viewing. Final Destination 3 is darker and faster than its predecessors, with a tinge of humor that lingers between the accidents. But you’re in for two hours of thrill with chunks of sickness and filthy scenes of fatality that might not go well with the nacho-popcorn snack you just washed down.

the Performances ...

Small scale performances, though well executed, might have just made the difference to this flick. Too many characters and almost identical screen time shared amongst each, Wendy and Kevin’s roles stand out as the better performances in FD 3.

This is the first time I’ve seen Mary Elizabeth Winstead on the big screen, and she pleases with a brilliant performance mixed with emotion and fear, the highlight of Wendy’s character. Ryan Merriman’s Kevin matures as the movie progresses, and the growth of responsibility is evident. Sam Easton (Frankie) and Texas Battle (Lewis) add the humour factor to Final Destination, something that was not that evident in the previous attempts.

the Effects ...

FD3 uses a host of convincing special effects combined with brilliant speed and camerawork to sting those horrible accidents into the viewer, leaving an impact. The build up to these freak deaths has always been amazing, all throughout the series, and FD3 doesn’t disappoint. The tan capsule death was horribly sick, and I can still remember a disgusting moment of camerawork in that particular sequence. The finale, in my opinion, was a tad fast to handle – though it attempts to exploit the unknown factor.

on the Flipside ...

FD3 lacks the killer thrill that it’s forefathers banked on, and the familiarization with the concept of death’s design has led to the audiences more accurate anticipation. In the end, it relies on speedy camerawork to see through the thrill.

and Finally ...

FD3 is definitely worth a watch, though it’s not for the weak-hearted. It leaves a sick feeling inside the stomach at the end, and for the first few minutes, you might find yourself obsessed with making sure you survive the possibility of a freaky accident around you.

Justice done for the third time to a novel idea.
