Hi MS members,
This article is especially meant for students who have just cleared IIT-JEE and are in a state of confusion about choosing the right IIT. Firstly I congratulate all of you for
your success, before I begin my lecturing (a thing which youll get used to soon).
Youve got 7 choices available to you- IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, IIT Guwahati, IIT Roorkee and IIT Kharagpur. As far as quality of education is concerned ALL IITs ARE EQUAL. These were exactly the words written on the black-board in the counselling hall of IIT Bombay (June 2000 when my son had just passed the exam securing AIR 320. He joined IIT Madras, Electrical branch)
Naturally students opt for the IIT which is closest to their hometowns and this is where they could make a serious mistake. Before filling out the preferences form you should spend a moment thinking about this important question: What would you really like to do in future?
IIT Madras is especially famous (or rather notorious) for its students going abroad for higher studies while the percentage of students doing MBA or similar management jobs is high in IIT Delhi. And this has been happening over past 10-15 years. (I wonder how??) Join an IIT where the seniors have done what you want to. This way youll get their valuable guidance. If you wish to start working immediatly after B. Tech I would suggest IIT Bombay because a lot of companies rush to IIT-B for the fresh recruits. Also, in IIT-B theres more flexibility in the academic curriculum while IIT Madras has very rigid and conventional academic system. There has always been acute water shortage in Madras every summer. So, semesters get compressed and students have to bear with greater work-load. But at the same time, students enjoy longer vacations. Also, theres no internet connection provided in the rooms, so students have to go to the labs to complete their assignments and other work.
About B.Tech/M.Tech dilemma - Again the same question should be pondered over. Never settle for any compromise with your branch. You should be able to study the subjects which you have natural inclination for. No point studying Einsteins theory if you love Organic molecules. Dont rely on the Branch change funda. Getting a branch change in IITs is very difficult. If your rank is high and you are able to get admission for B Tech, then thats it. You should go for B. Tech because you can later convert to M. Tech if you wish to. But, if your rank is low and M. tech option lets you go for your preferred branch, then M. Tech would be a good choice.
Thats all for the time being. I cannot write much about other IITs in this regard since I dont know much about them. You may add your queries in the comments area so that others can also see them. Avoid M2M as itll be difficult for me to answer same question repeatedly.
