This is a novel which is widely circulated and read. it has been written by Ernest Hemingway. one of the most interesting features of this novel is its setting. it has been set in the backdrop of world war one. Fredric Henry is a character who is a lieutenant. he drives ambulance for the Italian army. his love for Catherine Barkley who is a nurse is still remembered by the readers. he meets her for the first time and falls prey to her eyes. she too keeps herself busy in his memories. in the battle field Henry is badly wounded and for recovery he is brought to the hospital of Milan. he is delighted to know that his love Catherine has been transferred in the same hospital. here they develop an intimate relationship which can not be separated. under her care in the hospital of Milan his wounded leg is healed but due to excessive drinking he suffers from Jaundice. once his jaundice is cured he is again sent to the front as the army needed his service. while they depart from each other they understand that they can not live without each other. one episode leads to other and Henry flies from battlefield and leaves his men. he is reunited with Catherine at Stresa. in the climax we find Catherine dead while delivering a child and Henry is left alone. this novel is full of emotions and readers will love to read it.
