I really enjoyed Exodus by Leon Uris. It described the hardships and pain of creating the Jewish nation(Israel) in 1948. It is based on historical facts and while the people are not real, all of the events
are.
It delves deep into the conflicts and pains of trying to start a new nation bound to be filled with a lot of problems.
The main characters, Kitty Fremont, an American nurse whos husband is killed in WWII and has gone to Cyprus to help be a nurse for the D.P (Displaced Persons) camps there. She meets Ari, an Israeli underground master trying to smuggle the children out of the D.P camps, which are almost as bad as the Concentration Camps they had just survived, and bring them to Palestine and freedom, or to kibbutzim to help gain Israels independence and create an economy. EXODUS was the name of one of boats that was trying to smuggle the Jews who survived the Holocaust into Palestine. The story takes place after WWII when England was about to give the desicion of Palestine to the newly formed UN . Its an incredible book and if you dont read it youll miss out on a lot of great writing as well as a lot of historical knowledge.
