Harrowing Story (Never Board Etihad & Jet Airways)

It is with a profound sense of deprivation and denial that I am narrating my harrowing tale of woes that I had undergo at IGI Airport on the 9th April morning on my way back to Gaborone( Botswana) via Abu Dhabi and Johannesburg.

I disembarked from our car and rushed to join the long queue for Etihad Airways checki-in counter where board clearly displayed "Etihad Airways" but no flight no was indicated.

On enquiry with fellow passengers I was told that sometimes when there are not enough passengers for a flight. the Airline clubs them together  on a single flight for the said destination from where they disburse for their respective onward journey.

Since my ticket was clearly showing Etihad Airways Flight no EY 7608 I decided to wait for my turn to come in the same Etihad Airways queue. Much to my surprise when I reached the counter I was told to go to the Jet Airways counter which was quite far from there.(On my ticket "operated by Jet Airways" were written in most insignificant way). When I  reached the Jet counter they told me they cannot entertain me as the counter has closed even though enough time was still there for me to quickly clear the formalities of immigration and security check and to board the flight.

Despite my repeated requests the staff was not listening and asked me to go back to Etihad Airways which I did. But here again same callous attitude of the staff who asked me to go back to Jet Airways counters. So I was kept volleying between them with my trolley carrying heavy luggage. In  the meantime the flight took off for Abu Dhabi. On my repeated request an Etihad staff  connected me to Etihad Tollfree No. where the voice was almost totally inaudible on account of some noise in their phone. I even tried to call duty manager of Etihad Airways several times but he didn't answer my call. I requested them to put me in the next flight( as is the norm in this kind of case) to Abu Dhabi so that I could catch up with my other two flights on my way back to my destination. They refused again and there was one gentleman by the Etihad desk(Ashok Kumar) who refused to help me in any way. I again tried that Tollfree no and luckily my call went through. The guy on that Tollfree no told me that I ve to pay Rs46000+ in any case.

Neither Etihad nor Jet Airways were ready to take responsibility and even slightest semblance of help was totally missing. Because of their callous attitude I had to move up and down so much that I fell sick with my body ache and running temperatures. The trauma was so intense for me and my family who had come to see me off that we even met with an accident on our way back to our home from the airport.  Our car is badly damaged and the quote for its repair is about 80 thousnd to Rs1 lakh. Who would take responsibility for the trauma and pain that me and my family had to undergo on that ill-fated morning. I want full and immediate redressal of my grievances. Atleast they should compensate me fully for the fault of theirs which led to such a huge drama. I was supposed to join a job on the 11th April in Gaborone  now that has fallen in jeopardy.

Last but not the least the airline must answers these questions to passenger's satisfaction. Why cant they mention clearly and in bold letters the name and flight no of the alliance partner(in this case Jet Airways) alongwith their own on the ticket which can save one from a lot of hassles. If they have a tie up they should also at least have a few staff members to liaise between them to help a needy passenger. On so many occasions the flight has been delayed to facilitate a solitary fellow passenger to complete the formalities of checkin, security check and immigration. Why it was not done in this case? Even today morning I went to Etihad Airways office at Barakhamba road to sort my problem out but again I ve to face the same story. A lady there by the name Bhawna blamed me and said I ve to pay the penalty of Rs35000/- Rs40000/-  . I asked her on what basis are u charging me so much? She didn't asnwer me then.

I thought the airline is sensitive enough to attend to my genuine grievances without forcing me to look for alternative remedies but I was wrong and now unfortunately I ve to take help from social media hoping that better sense will prevail.
