Playing Badminton with Mosquitoes

PLAYING BADMINTON WITH MOSQUITOES INTRODUCTION I wrote about how in our fight to rid our house of mosquitoes, we had finally fixed insect netting. (You can read about this in my in my write-up about insect screens).

But a few mosquitoes did manage to infiltrate inside, especially if the door out of the house, was left open in the evenings (particularly during “swarming time”). These would trouble us no end. The solution we found for these infiltrators was to “zap” them with the electronic mosquito swatter.

What is it? How does it work? The “zapper” consists of a small racquet, (mostly made in the shape of the badminton racquet). It has a wire grid, which gets charged when a switch on the handle is pressed. (A LED on the side also glows at this time).

Mosquitoes and other insects get “zapped” (i.e. electrocuted), when they come into contact with the charged grid. some models have this charged grid exposed, so that one gets a very nasty shock if one chances to touch the wires when charged.

(And the grid can retain charge for a considerable length of time !). Other models are safer as they have larger spaced wire grids on both sides of the main grid, effectively covering it and preventing human contact with the charged grid, so that one will not get an accidental shock. Two pen-light cells are used to provide the power required.

The Cost

I bought it on the net threewo years back, but I am told that it is now available on the street corners for anything between Rs 100 to Rs 200 !

Advantages

This is an active form of warfare, and can give a peculiar satisfaction (the kind which perhaps the SPCA or some more sensitive people may not approve of)

It provides reasonable exercise, in that one has to go after the vermin, and swat them out of existence.

If the switch is kept “ON”, total annihilation occurs, as the vermin are totally incinerated and vapourised. If the switch is pressed only once, then the mosquitoes get stunned and fall down dead. (There will be no acrid smell of cremation. No carbon-dioxide pollution to the atmosphere ! Hence eco-friendly !)

Can be used for any flying insects (mosquitoes, flies, wasps etc). Bigger insects may need to be zapped several times before they are finally rendered motionless.

Caution

Children (and possibly even adults !), do get fascinated by this child-sized racquet. But it would be prudent to keep it out of the reach of very small children. The type without the protective grids, should only be used with great care (by anyone and everyone), as any careless movement, even the slightest contact with the exposed wires (if holding the charge), can be quite a painful experience.

Conclusion

We found that the “Zapper” could be used on the singing insects, and each success was heralded by a flash of light or a loud clap (sometimes almost a bang), as the hapless insect was eliminated. If one was rather lazy, you could wait for daylight, when the winged mosquitoes seemed to make a bee-line for the windows (and would alight on the netting we have put on the windows), and could be tackled more slowly and less vigorously there. Of course then you would miss the joy of playing badminton with the mosquitoes !
