Diet beverages - as they call them, are flooding the market nowadays and thanks to fitness freaks, most of them are doing well in the market. Diet Pepsi is one of them. A big question mark is what are
these made of and how safe are they.
Diet Pepsi - The Looks
It is mainly available in 330ml can - the blue coloured logo of Pepsi have always attracted me and is one of the reasons of the success of Pepsi in India over Coke. The colour combination of Pepsi outlets in public places is such that it is easily eye catching and you can locate it from a distance. This is not the case with its competitors. Experience it by standing at a distance and viewing both Pepsi and Coke outlets and see for yourself, which attracts you. Anyway, the shape of the can is normal - nowadays all the beverages are available in that shaped can with easy to open pull type tab on the top. Looks great when chilled and water drops dropping through its length. Could attract anyone in a shelf in a supermarket. Full points for the looks. It is also available in 500 ml pet bottles though rarely seen in the market.
The Ingredients
Now this is a major topic for discussion. Why they call it ’diet’ - yeah coz it contains less than one calorie. But how, when it is sweet??? Yes it is possible by adding some sugar substitutes which are low in calorie. If you read the ingredients secion on the diet pepsi can, you could find two ingredients not very common - Aspartame and Ascesulfame K........................
Those who dont know about these two ingredients which are added in all the drinks titled Diet, lots of controversial articles have been published all over the world about the harmful effects of these two ingredients on human body including some genetic disorders!!!!!!!!!! We dont know the authenticity of these articles, but in many countries these ingredients are not allowed!!!!!!!!!! It is worth mentioning over here that Indian PFA (Prevention of Food Adulteration Act) allows these two ingredients in carbonated beverages upto a particular limit - perhaps the exact quantity is permitted which is added in these Diet Drinks:)
Now there are lots of other sugar substitutes available, one of which is also permitted by Indian PFA. It is being heard that Pepsi and Coke are switching to another sugar substitute and are going to replace aspartame and ascesulfame K. Then does that mean that we were consuming something with harmful effects for all these years?????????? A BIG QUESTION WHICH REMAINS UNANSWERED
Taste
Diet Pepsi has some after taste in the throat which is not there after consuming ordinary pepsi. This is the case with all diet drinks and it cannot be avoided may be due to the sugar substitutes used.
But overall a good product for those who wish to quench their thirst with a cold beverage without adding calories.
