From the mute movies of the colonial era to the present day Hindi movies, Indian cinema has come a long way. Undoubtedly, Indian movies are second only to Hollywood movies in terms of worldwide preference
for entertainment.

Up until the late 1990’s, most Indian movies, however, were centered around love, poor boy rich girl/ vice versa formulas, but Gadar and Lagaan in 2001 brought about indications of change in Hindi cinema for good. Continuing this tradition of change, elite director Sanjay Gadhvi, recently gave us the fast-paced, modern day, Dhoom under the banner of Yash Raj Productions. Although Dhoom is no match for earlier Yash Raj Productions such as Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge and Mohabattien, Sanjay Gadhvi seems to be going on the right path as a director with this movie.

Synopsis:

The movie revolves around three young men- ACP Jai Dixit (Abhishek Bachchan), Kabir (John Abraham), and Ali (Uday Chopra). ACP Jai Dixit is a very passionate and successful cop, who is handed the case of a biker gang led by a cold, calculating, highly organized and a very tech-savvy young bandit, Kabir. Kabir is a genius who uses his superior technological aptitude to his advantage for the wrong cause - robbery.

Every time his biker gang conducts a robbery, the police manage to get onto their tail and follow them, but Kabir’s excellent bikers and their ultra-fast bikes soon leave the slow and hulky police bikes and unskilled bikers biting dust. Kabir’s recent strikes have given the Mumbai police department some sleepless nights, which is outdated, ill equipped and poorly trained to deal with such high speed chases and precisely calculated crimes.

Taking this into consideration, Jai Dixit seeks the help of a motorbike mechanic, Ali, who has been the continuous champion of several motorbike races, and is Jai’s last hope of putting the havoc created by Kabir to rest. But the relationship between Jai and Ali is not without differences. Jai realizes that Ali is not exactly the right person that a cop might want to seek help from. An orphan from an early age and a poor motorbike mechanic, Ali finds himself on the wrong side of the law quite often.

Nonetheless, both young men decide to stick together for their own materialistic interests. Even after careful and precise planning, the duo fails to nab Kabir twice, and a humiliated ACP Jai Dixit resigns from his job. Jai Dixit and Ali both start blaming each other for the blunders, and their differences deepen. But soon they realize that it might not be too late. After wrapping up his reign of havoc in Mumbai, Kabir has set his eyes on a heavily secure casino in Goa. If the two successfully stop him there, they would get everything back that they have lost, but will they be able to do it? Watch Dhoom to find out!

Performances:

With Dhoom, Abhishek Bachchan has silenced his critics, and John Abraham has humiliated those skeptic of his acting skills, not just because of the movie’s box office report, but because of the excellent performance by both. John Abraham, clearly, was the show-stealer of the movie. His performance as the quiet, shrewd, cold and calculating bandit was the life of the movie. Although Abhishek Bachchan performed very well, I believe that the role was not suited for him. Uday Chopra needs to hunt for an alternate career instead of acting. Just like the role of ACP Dixit did not suit Abhishek Bachchan in the movie, the career of acting does not suit Uday Chopra in real life. The ladies Esha Deol and Rimi Sen had little to do.

Analysis:

Sanjay Gadhvi has proven himself as an able director with Dhoom. One thing I liked about this movie was that songs and music were very situational and used only as a supplement and not forced after periodic intervals, unlike most of Hindi movies. Other than that, music of the movie itself is first rate. The movie visually is also very stunning and the special effects are classy.

Final Word:

It?s movies like Dhoom for which people spend large sums of money buying powerful home theater systems and huge plasma televisions. The movie has added another four stars to the elite banner of Yash Raj Films. The music, visuals, performances, and the story of Dhoom are all appreciable. The movie is specifically targeted at younger audiences but also contains good entertainment value for elders.
