Dhobi Ghat is an eccentric movie, not your commercial desperate to entertain drama. Its more about looking at people how they are, along with their flaws, insecurities and unexpected displays of kindness and wisdom, without overhyping any of them. Its start is bound to make you feel its a weird film, but as it progresses, you slowly connect to the characters, the story seems real.
Spoiler alert
Aamir plays the introverted artist who feels guilty after he lets his introverted nature slip by and indulge in a one night stand with the NRI return Monica(Shai). She appears like a typical spoiled brat until later, when you see her democratic, indiscriminate attitude towards artists and dhobis alike. What really touches you is the journey of a Muslim woman through her video tapes as she transforms from being an innocent, lively, enthusiatic new Mumbaiite, to someone who has to grapple with the dark realities of people and places which seem great from a distance. Prateik is qute the charm of the movie, with the innocence he brings and the honesty he potrays along with his otherwise rustic character. The unexpected last scene changes your perception of people you would rather be cynical about. To sum it up, if you are mesmerised by conflicts in human character, you dont mind trying something different, and you dont want to forget your brains while you start another movie, Dhobi Ghat is the kind of arthouse cinema you can pick.It is pretty much artistic just like Aamir's character in the film.
