We decided to try out Punjabi cuisine during a recent (13th Nov, 2004) visit to Chennai. Since we had heard a bit about
Dhabba Express, we thought that would be the best place to savour some alsi Punjabi khana.
The restaurant is located in Annanagar (East) near the Roundtana.
One of the first things that strikes you about the place is the not-very-nice ambience. The place looks quite dingy and rundown. Just as we were about to seat ourselves, we saw a lizard (eeks !!!) on the seat ! Needless to say, after this we had second thoughts about having our lunch there !
The menu has Punjabi as well as Chinese items listed. We ordered chicken tikka and gobi manchurian for starters. Both were quite tasty but the chicken tikka portion was small. The lassi was OK. The Hot & Sour chicken soup was decent.
In the main course, the rotis were not as good as what one would expect in a Punjabi dhaba. Mutton Roganjosh was the best among the side dishes that we had ordered. The vegetables (carrot and peas) in the Veg Makhanwala were not fully cooked and the dal makhni was disappointing.
The service was not prompt. The gobhi manchurian was brought so late that we reached the conclusion that they might have forgotten that we had ordered it !
The rates are the best part about this place.....quite reasonable.....Our bill came upto Rs.500 (there were 4 of us) without having ordered desserts.
