Dehradun, my hometown, is the capitol of Uttarakhand state. I was born here and studied here for sometime, then moved out, but finally I am back and settled here again.
Dehradun was a green city long time ago until recently for last 3 years, lots of construction going around(apartments), for which the greenery had to pay a cost.
The weather of the city used to awesome 2-3 decades ago, now it is very hot in summers. Air-conditioners which were never seen in Dehradun before are now much needed in every home for scorching heat and humidity.
Dehradun has a very old station and a small airport. The airport has less flights as of now, but is well connected to Delhi airport, frequent flights. In just 50 minutes, you reach Delhi by air. Then you have road transport which the most used for transportation. With new Volvo buses, the road trips have become very pleasant and comfortable.
When in Dehradun, you have many things to see likely FRI(Forest Research Institute), Indian Military Academy, Sahashtradhara(waterfall and swimming, nice during summers), Robbers' cave(rocks and water for lazing around, good in summers), Buddha Monastery(clamentown), Paltan Bazaar(for shopping), Malsi Deer Park(now Dehradun Zoo), Rajaji National Park. The city is very small and you do not have much to do.
It is very congested during summer vacations with hotel prices going up to en-cash on visitors(local hotels do it). There are many hotels in Dehradun(for every budget) for stay, you can book them on-line too.
The city is very safe to travel, no threats even if you are out in midnight for stroll or drive, it the best time to go out as weather in night is very pleasant and the view of lights on nearby hill station, Mussoorie, is very good.
